Who says that a Hero has to be a tall, handsome fellow chasing beautiful girls and handling half a dozen rowdies single handed without even ruffling a single strand of hair! Well, at least that is the image that crops up in our imagination at the mention of the word Hero, thanks to our movies.

If we look around we will certainly find a handful of people who have proven that they are no less than heroes. They would have faced the battles in life successfully and emerged winners at the face of adversity.

One such person in our neighbourhood is Raghunathan. He lost his father when he was just 19 years old and was forced to assume the responsibility of his three sisters and brother, along with his widowed mother. Luckily for him they owned a small house on a decent sized plot. His was not a sob story but an intelligent management of his resources and emerging out of the travails of life, as a winner.

He was brilliant in his studies, and was about to complete his graduation (B.Com) but he took up the clerks job offered on compassionate grounds , as his father was a serving Government employee at the time of his death. He pursued his education privately and completed Charted accountancy.

In the meantime he made sure that his siblings were focussed on studies and all his sisters complete

d graduation and his brother secured an officer’s job in a Bank. He married a well educated, employed and like minded girl, who supported him in his responsibilities. He, his wife and brother together got his three sisters married into decent families.

By the time all the responsibilities he inherited from his father were completed, he had set up his own accountancy firm, which was flourishing well. Everybody was surprised that today Raghunathan was vacating the house. Everyone was surprised and disturbed. As usual they thought that he was selling away the house due to financial burdens and every body started enquiring the reason , sympathetically! Raghunathan told everyone that they were shifting temporarily as the present house is going to be demolished and a new modern house will be built in its place and they will all come back.

Every body was amazed at the turn of events. As I said, our hero’s life was not a sob story. Though he went through all the hardships in life,He handled it smartly, with discipline and planning and made it interesting as well as successful. Of course, he was fortunate in having a good family and supportive wife.

(This is a tribute to all middle-class men who successfully wade through the ocean of life "Bhavasagar" albeit facing several mighty waves in the ocean and sometimes Sharks!)
