Cold Day

Cold Day

One unusually cold day I had to go to school. I hoped it would be the normal day with Maths and English lessons and all the boring things in life, but this was not going to happen.

I arrived at school around 8:30 am. It was cold, miserable and wet. I longed for a good old hot chocolate, but that was not likely! Resigning myself to my frozen lot, I walked around the corner of the imposing school building. There was snow about a foot deep covering the whole playground. I stopped in awe, breath taken, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever beheld. It was as white as a cloud, laying soft and fluffy like a big ball of cotton tinged gold by the morning sun.

This was a good sign, maybe school would be cancelled and then I would not have to hand in my science report which was only half done thanks to my little brother, who ate my first copy. “Wouldn’t it be great if the school was canceled,” I thought, “a day all to myself”. Then I could go home and sit in front of a nice warm fire with a cup of hot chocolate and finally work on my dreaded science report without disturbance.

It would also mean I would not have to tell my intimidating science teacher that my bird ate it, because if I told her that I had only completed half of it, she would likely rip my head off and send me straight to detention every lunch time for the rest of my school life “scary”!

Soon every one was there, screaming and yelling more excited than usual, rejoicing at the presence of the thick, soft snow. It was not long before the principal came down with the news we had all been waiting for. School was over, “YEA!!” well at least for today. My science report was safe and I looked forward to warming myself by the fire with that hot chocolate I had been dreaming about.

I was home just after 10 o’clock. It was still as cold and miserable as ever, the fire was lit, the hot chocolate made and the TV on, I was set for the day. The next day my science report was still not done, but my excuse was ready and thankfully my awful science teacher was not so angry today and let me have an extra week!! Special moments of snow and days off school are too treasured to waste on SCIENCE.
