It was a beautiful day in heaven.

Then again, heaven was always beautiful, as far as anybody was concerned.

And beautiful days were the nicest and the quietest. At least, that was what Alice was thinking, as she gazed at her reflection in the mirror of the bedchamber she shared with her twin sister, Alicia. A smile was reminiscent on her small round face. Looking at her, nobody would believe that she was three hundred years old – she looked like she was a teenager. Alicia was the one who somehow looked older, despite looking identical to her sister. How this was possible even the gods did not know.

Alice finally removed herself from in front of the mirror and turned around in a deliberate circle. The bedroom she shared with her twin was brightly lit, so not one object that was left lying about was hiding in shadows. It was really the cleanest room she ever knew. Or so she hoped.

Alice was a freak for cleanliness, as her sister always accused her. Alicia believed in having a little bit of mess around the room, something Alice tried to suppress cleaning. The last time Alicia was in the room, she lectured her sister about this for the millionth time, and, in an effort to set an example, went a little overboard, which left all of her night things and brushes splayed all over the room. Alice sighed now as she began to pick them up one-by-one. She wondered how Alicia was faring in the Joe’s Millennial Fair that was always held at this time once every millennia… and for which Alicia had left in such a hurry after her lecture.

It took Alice about quarter of an hour to quickly set the room aright. She had even taken a broomstick to clear off all the dust in the room and make it spot-free. The thought of Alicia coming in and taking in all in made her grimace tiredly.

For a moment, she stood and thought about it.

“Oh, what the hell,” she muttered to herself. “I’m not about to ‘unclear’ my room… if there even is such a word.”

She put the broomstick away and went back to the mirror. She adjusted her hair and dress. Now, she was all set to go out and begin her day.

That the day would soon turn into hellish night was something she could never have foreseen.

Alicia was among the first beings to enter the fair.

She looked around her and there was barely anybody seen. She looked at the tiny sundial on her wrist and realised that it was too early in the morning for any soul to be up and roaming about on a weekend. Despite what people below thought, heaven wasn’t full of roses and bliss; souls had to work, too, so that, in their next lives, they wouldn’t be born too lethargic.

It was something Alicia never understood, because she had never been a mortal in all of her three hundred years of living as an angel in heaven.

And, no matter what people below stubbornly believed, angels definitely weren’t the messengers of god. If that were true, she would not be loitering around heaven half the day like she always was.

In fact, there was no single god that Alicia knew of, but different gods who took care of different aspects of heaven, hell, and everything in between. For instance, there was Armanda, the goddess of all living and creation; Quintal, the god of all flora, and Amarthya, the Mother Goddess. Alicia couldn’t think of anybody higher than Amarthya, who was the leader of all gods and goddess of the heaven she knew of.

She decided to go to the round-about, her most favourite ride in the fair. It was the first place she went to every millennia when the Joe’s Millennial Fair was held.

However, as she neared the round-about, something odd struck her; she couldn’t tell what it was. She paused for a moment in her tracks and frowned at it.

‘What could it be?’ she wondered, thoughtfully. ‘There’s something there… something strange… Maybe I shouldn’t ride on it so early in the morning. I mean, I just had a heavy breakfast, so I should probably wait until a few hours later.

And so, she turned away and as soon as she did that, another feeling struck her mind and began to practically pull her towards the direction in which the huge round-about stood. She turned back towards it and slowly, without her quite realising it, her mind went foggy and her eyes glazed over.

Anybody who saw her then would’ve thought she was just an ordinary angel and not think more than that. In fact, Alicia had a reputation to be the naughtiest creature in heaven. And she never failed to disappoint people in that respect.

Even as she walked slowly, step-by-step, towards the round-about, a feeble voice somewhere at the back of her mind was trying to warn her against it. But, as could be expected, Alicia didn’t hear it.

She bought a ticket from the bored-looking boy who stood guard at the round-about tent. She was the last person in the line to board it; after she passed through, the boy closed the door, thus cutting off the next person in the line and forcing him and the others behind him to wait for their turn in the next round.

Alicia went to seat herself on a Pegasus and held the handle tight in front of her. A horn blew a second later, indicating that the ride would begin in three seconds. The boy who sold the tickets blew his horn three more times and then, the ride began.

It was precisely at this moment that the glazed look on Alicia’s face faded away and she came back to her old self. She looked around her, but it was all a blur and she was going up and down consistently. At first, it scared her, but then, she realised that she was on the round-about ride.

“I wonder which animal it is I sat on!” she said to herself. She raked her brains and tried to think of what had happened a few moments ago. “Hey, wait… I didn’t want to ride this now, did I? I remember some strange aura coming from the direction and me turning away because I had a doubt… Ugh, I really should stop spacing out and start paying more attention to my surroundings! Anyway, now that I’m here, I’ll try and enjoy this ride. And when it’s done, I’m outta here!”

The ride went on for another couple of minutes before her animal suddenly seemed to come alive and rear up. Alicia screamed and held the handle tighter. The Pegasus arched its back, with her on it, and then flung forward with a lot of energy. Alicia was thrown headfirst in the process!

At the same time as she started to fly in the air, a white beam of light appeared in front of her.

“This can’t be good!” she cried aloud. “I’m not dying! Why am I seeing the white light?!”

Had this not been so scary, she probably would have laughed at her own joke. But as she was sailing into the light, her breath caught in her throat and she closed her eyes tightly, waiting for a forceful impact to destroy her!
