This is the story of an old, abandoned staff quarter near the Kanke area in Ranchi, recorded in CBI files as "Case No. 404."
The Deserted Quarter of Ranchi
The story is set in 2024. On the outskirts of Ranchi, an old colonial-era bungalow had long been the subject of chilling urban legends. Locals claimed that bizarre, distorted noises echoed from it at night, and anyone who dared to step inside lost their mental balance. The rumors turned into a grim reality when the son of a prominent local businessman was found dead inside the mansion.
The local police found absolutely no leads. The official cause of death was ruled a cardiac arrest, but the sheer terror frozen on the boy's face suggested it was anything but natural. Under immense public pressure, the case was handed over to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation).
Enter the CBI
Senior Investigator Vikram Singh was assigned to lead the case. Vikram was a hardcore pragmatist who didn't believe in ghosts; he suspected the bungalow was being used as a front for a drug cartel or a criminal syndicate.
Upon arriving in Ranchi, Vikram and his team began questioning the locals. An elderly resident warned him:
"Sir, do not go there. That place no longer belongs to the living. 'She' is still there, seeking revenge for what they did to her."
Vikram brushed the warning aside. To uncover the truth, he decided to spend a night inside the bungalow alone, setting up hidden night-vision cameras and highly sensitive audio recorders throughout the property.
The Night of Terror: 12:00 AM
At exactly midnight, Vikram was sitting on a dusty couch in the main hall. The silence was deafening. Suddenly, his walkie-talkie crackled to life with the panicked voice of his junior officer stationed outside:
"Sir! There’s someone standing at the second-floor window!"
Vikram unholstered his service pistol, switched on his flashlight, and headed upstairs. He found the door to the corner room ajar. The moment he stepped inside, the temperature plummeted drastically—so cold that his breath turned into visible mist.
The Truth Written in Blood
As Vikram swept his flashlight across the room, the beam caught the far wall. Written in a dark, dried substance that looked suspiciously like blood was a message:
"We were declared insane, but the doctors were the killers."
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door slammed shut behind him with immense force. Vikram lunged for the handle, but it wouldn’t budge—it felt as if it had been welded into the frame.
From the darkest corner of the room, a low, ragged sobbing broke the silence. Vikram pointed his flashlight toward the sound. In the beam of light, a heavy, rusted iron chain was suspended in mid-air. There was no one holding it, yet it was being violently yanked upward, rattling aggressively.
Then, Vikram felt a freezing breath right against the back of his neck. A woman’s raspy voice whispered directly into his ear: "Have you come to close my file too?"
Vikram spun around, firing a shot into the dark, but there was no one there. The bullet embedded itself in the wall, and in the fading light of his flickering torch, yellowed medical documents from the 1970s began raining down from the ceiling.
The CBI Final Report: Case Closed
The next morning, the CBI team broke down the door to find Vikram unconscious on the floor. His hair had turned entirely white overnight, and his eyes were wide with residual horror. He was immediately hospitalized and later took early retirement, refusing to ever speak about that night.
When the agency analyzed the audio recorders and dug into the property's history, they uncovered a dark secret:
In 1975, the bungalow operated as an illegal, private extension of a mental asylum where patients were subjected to horrific, unauthorized medical experiments.
A wealthy family had paid the doctors to declare a young woman insane to steal her inheritance, and she was tortured until she died in that very room.
The audio files did not capture Vikram’s gunshots; instead, they were filled with the sound of breaking chains and a blood-curdling, non-human shriek.
CBI Inquiry Result:
The CBI officially closed the investigation, labeling it "Unresolved due to lack of forensic evidence." The bungalow was permanently sealed under government orders. Today, a rusted board stands outside the property gates in Ranchi, bearing a simple warning: "TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED."
Locals claim that on stormy nights, you can still hear the distinct rattling of chains echoing from the second floor.
