A Moment With My Love

 

            It was an early hour of the morning. I lay on the freshly watered grass, my hand resting comfortably in the hand of my beloved, my Amelia. There was a medley of aromas in the air, a combination of moist grass, soil and tender, dew covered daffodils. I watched Amelia as she was completely immersed in the beauty of the sky, letting out giggle every time she observed a new shape in the clouds. Her giggle was the singular sound in the world more pleasant than anything a musical instrument could produce. It was the sound of innocence, of tenderness, of unhindered spirit, of love. If I were to select one moment in my life that I would long to go back to, even decades later, I would choose this one. Just watching her, rapt by the fairy tale told by the sky, her melodious laughter echoing through my mind, reinforced my belief, that God was the greatest artist of them all, for only he could create something so enchanting, so magical, so innocently disarming.

“Why do you look at me like that?” Amelia asked, a shy smile appearing on her delicate face.

“I could look at you for hours, my love.” The truth slithered off my tongue effortlessly.

“You’re cute,” she said, as she playfully slapped my cheek.

“Not nearly as cute as you.” I was quick to respond.

I pulled her hand close to me and kissed it. The fragrance of her palm was enticing; a mixture of grass, moisture and a hint of strawberry. Her bright blue eyes turned towards me and her face lit up with delight. I continued to stare at her tender face, her wonderfully crafted nose, scarlet lips and a small dimple on her right cheek that appeared every time she smiled.

“I love you,” she said.

 “And I, you.”

“There you go. That’s the moment you asked for. Shall we proceed?” My mind was brought back to the present.

“Yes, I’m ready. Let’s go,” I said, as the gates of heaven flung open and the angel of death beckoned me inside.
