You will never be enough

You can do everything right and they still won’t see it.

you can listen to all the things they say, even notice what irks them,

things they try to hide away, you can put them first every single time.

and it still won’t be enough.

They will win over your heart by showing you that they are willing to give you everything that you want.

it’s always beautiful in the beginning, the calm before the storm.

and then, things will go bad.

starting with the most mundane of things,

things you wouldn’t even care about giving up,

things you don’t even notice at first,

because you feel that it’s a tiny sacrifice compared to losing them.

They will change you, completely.

you won’t notice the change in your behaviour – but you’ll start distancing yourself from your former friends.

you’ll start asking for their permission before going out or doing anything.

And only when someone tells you you’ve changed and you find yourself fumbling to come up with your lost you.
