Rakshabandhan

With my heart full of jubilation, I am waiting for my unique brother.

 A wonderful brother like he, in this world there can never be another!      

 The sacred Rakhi thread, on his wrist, to mark our close bond I will tie   

 I’ll wish him a long life and good health, also my lasting love till I die.

 When Krishna had once cut his finger, Draupadi, her sari had torn      

 And tied it with the cloth, and this is how the Rakhi ritual was born.     

 Or when there was a massive war between the demons and the Gods       

 It went on for twelve years and the demoralized Gods were at all odds.

 Indrani, Indra’s wife tied a Rakhi on him and sent him confidently to war, 

 The demons fled in sheer panic and the Gods were victorious evermore.       

 In History, Karnavati the Queen of Chittor had sent a Rakhi to Humayun ,      

 Bahadur Shah of Gujarat had attacked, Humayun came- but not too soon!

The women had already committed Jauhar! Yet Rakhi’s bond was so strong      

 Even a mighty emperor from his expedition, for miles had instantly come along.         

 In 1905, by the tying of Rakhis, by Hindu women on Muslim brothers of Bengal,     

 Rabindranath united them all and the division of Bengal, he was able to stall

.

The brothers know it is their life-long sacred obligation to protect their sister.      

 The Sisters know it is a symbol for their caring, for their matchless brother!
