Just This Once

Just This Once

We never get to look directly into our own eyes;

But I looked into someone's eyes and I knew mine would look just like those, just once.

I always lied, in every sense of the word;

I did stand up to the truth of my own being, just once.

I never minded watching people pass by me;

I wanted someone to look back, just once.

I always burned maps and followed the wrong star;

I somehow reached the doorsill of the right dusk, just once.

These verses will never make sense;

Please read these over and over again, they will light up in meaning, just once.

I'm not nearly as broken as I need to be;

I need to be properly broken, just once.

This song won't stop playing in my heart;

Please dance with me on it; just once.

I've also never felt bad about an unfinished poem; just this once.
