Holi in October!
Holi in October!
October 2011
In the desert land
Eleven of us
Friends and family
On the way to Jaisalmer Fort
The polished, metalled highway
With scrubland on either side
And little children selling
Freshly plucked custard apple
On the dividers: life on a different plane
The sun slowly glides towards the western sky,
But evening darkness is still sometime away
We take a journey-break and come down
To stretch our weary limbs
It is Pokhran
The signboard says
Jaisalmer: 100kms
Pokhran: historic
Pokhran: beautiful
Camels walk along the horizon
Munching what I don’t remember
Their turbaned-riders sing lively songs
Which one I don’t remember.
I remember only
the sky: dusty-red, flaming-orange
magic-purple, puzzling-pink; colours I still see when I shut my eyelids
It is Holi again in October!
