The River And I
The River And I
Suddenly a train whistles past
Blurs my tired eyes
Night descends
On the solitary platform
Emptiness sings
Two giant men haul a sack
Along the track
And then up the winding steps
I watch them from a distance
What’s inside I wonder
They reach the top
Stop and look around
I peep
The two men talk to each other
In muffled tones
Can’t hear

A dog scurries past
I am scared
I am lost
I don’t peep
But I’m back to business again
Face the men
See them pulling out a heavy thing
From inside the sack
It’s a box big and black
They lift it up
With strong hands
And suddenly fling it into the river below
I hear a cry
And so does the river
Who was inside
We can’t decide!
