She held him closed within her palms
Only to have him slipping away like sand
Every grip, every embrace
Pushing him further away to reclaim his space

It hurt to realize, the pain and fear
That, to her, seemed to obliterate every obstacle
Was nothing to him, but mere suffocation
Her need just another negative emotion

As he pushed, she loosened her grasp
Letting him go, his own way to choose
As he snapped away, amidst the pain and the sting
She lost her only sense of belonging

As years passed, the fire that once engulfed
Lay extinguished until he returned
Then again passions flared, temperaments broke them apart
Venom spreading into either heart

Fire then gave way to icy coldness
Dull despair, wordless glances
All they shared was plain indifference
Mutual coolness their only defense

Today they are but strangers once again
Unable to bury the past
Forgiven, not forgotten the memories once sweet
A story that has ended, yet incomplete
