Nay, I don’t think I am going to find a companion, it's better I don’t think of it anymore. Ah! Prajakta you will find your man, remember the law of attraction. You wait for good people and good things to happen to you when you have patience. Now come on let's go, I don’t want you to be late for your poetry recital. We ought to reach Mayfair by 9 sharp.

Beyond words

When I want to pen words about you,

Words don’t spill over these empty pages,

I strike off the verses that I write about you,

Tomorrow when you receive blank letters in your mailbox;

Remember my love has crossed horizons beyond description.

The crowd broke into a round of applause, and in the crowd, there was someone who cheered on top of his voice, the head chef of Mayfair, Jay Sharma. As the crowd cascaded for buffet, Jay approached Prajakta to greet her and appreciate her work. Hey lovely recital Miss …? umm Its Prajakta she fumbled. Jay spoke keenly about her work and could sense some vibe that he had never felt around anyone. Could I have your Instagram handle name so that I can read more of your work? Yeah sure its ‘Greenscarfgal’

A week later Prajakta’s facebook messenger popped and it was Jay. Can the chef meet you for lunch tomorrow, I got my week off and would like to spend it with you. After racking her brain for a minute she said ‘yes’ at 3 café Prego. An hour later her phone beeped ‘I am very angry with you’ I am in Mumbai past one month and I haven’t seen you. She replied ‘10’oclock café Tea villa; breakfast and the shoot are on, See you Ajay. The day had just shown up and Prajakta’s dad had been running a high temperature. she thought it would be better that she calls off the lunch date with Jay.

I am sorry I won’t be able to make it chef my dad’s a bit unwell can we keep this for some other day.

Yeah, sure thing, take care of him Jay replied.

Three weeks passed by and Jay was waiting for the right time to ask Prajakta for lunch again, however now she avoided meeting him as she feared getting emotionally attached. Jay’s efforts didn’t go in vain and Prajakta agreed to meet him for lunch. Jay offered to pick her up from the library as it falls on his way. As she sat into his car she felt uneasy. She always fumbled around Jay and avoided too much eye contact with him. Jay knew Prajakta’s dilemma and her reason for being in a shell. Jay broke the ice and blabbered about his life and what his daily schedule looks like.

Prajakta was a good listener and had immense patience as well. Amidst the entangled thoughts Prajakta told herself ‘he is cute and he looks so charming in black’ however she realized she had just promised herself ‘no love’ and fanned away those thoughts.

As they sat for lunch, Jay took the opportunity to ask why she had been single for so long. ‘Ah I am happy being single I think it’s great going for these solo trips and singlehood also means no emotional dependence’. The afternoon passed by at a wink’s pace and they both parted for the day. ‘I think I’ve fallen in love with her, I guess I should meet her again’, Jay thought to himself. Prajakta did not avoid spending time with him but had a clear thought of not falling in love.

One afternoon her phone rang and it was Jay ‘Hey, you owe me a treat girl you just cleared your Mba, let's catch up? Yeah sure see you carters 3.30. she picked doughnuts for Jay as a small token of celebration. Let’s have churros? Jay suggested. I don’t consume sugars, dude. Oh, come on we are celebrating and churros aren’t too sugary. Jay fed her with his hands and it reminded her of her grandmother. Prajakta felt a whirlwind in her heart that evening and could not take Jay off her mind. Time went by and Jay had made a very special place in her life.

One evening Jay drove her around Powai lake and amidst all chuckling Jay said ‘I need to tell you something, I am Moving to Canada for my higher studies’.

Prajakta’s heart sank for a millisecond but she concealed it with her smile.

That’s great, newer experiences, a new life living all by yourself, it will make you independent in all sense.

There’s one more thing I want to tell you, Jay added.

Tell me.

I want to spend these two months with you and want to know you better before I leave for my studies.

Prajakta had garnered all hints that her life will take a 360-degree turn and this made her nervous. I am not going to let my walls down again, giving someone your bare soul is a daunting task and I can’t do it. However, when love has to enter all of these rigid thoughts ought to slash like a hammer being thrown on a glass sheet, that’s what love does always! Jay would always spend his week offs with Prajakta and would express a thing or two hinting that he has fallen in love with her. One evening they went bowling and every time Prajakta scored at bowling her face would lit up. Post bowling session Jay held her hand and this made her face go red. It’s not that nobody had held her hand ever before but that evening had some blossoming, new flowers had sprouted from its buds. She thought to herself ‘Now I cannot turn away, from this’

Prajakta intently looked into his eyes and turned away when he looked back. That was 90’s way of love and Prajakta was indeed like that.

What do you think about falling in love? Jay asked. Such questions always made her nervous. Nothing, she tried to change the topic of discussion by cracking jokes. However, Jay was adamant this time to peep into her mind. To lighten up the air he said ‘Prajakta, get out of your literature for once! and guffawed. As Jay approached the driveway of her building he said that I need to talk to you for ten minutes. Prajakta, I have started liking you. And I really want to know what you feel. To me, it is more than ‘just friends’ and I am not afraid of expressing this. Prajakta looked out of the window not knowing what to reply to this. Her heart pounded. It was a contradictory moment for her.

At once she had to let that rigid decision of her not falling in love break down. Actually, Jay, I wanted to take little more time before I say anything, but the fact that you are leaving the country in two months has altered my decision and I cannot turn away from how I feel for you. Honestly, it’s the first time that somebody holding my hand did not alarm me. It’s good that we have little time to know each other before you leave. Prajakta hugged him before she parted, the embrace expressed things words couldn’t.

The next morning a trail of thoughts ran into her head and she thought that it’s good to turn to a friend for advice when you are puzzled. She casually discussed it with her best friend at the university ‘tell me something if a guy holds your hand and it calms you down, what does this mean? You are in love with Prajakta, her friend replied. However, Prajakta wasn’t sure if Jay felt the same. She decided to ask him and called Jay post his soccer match.

Hey, How did it go?

Ah was good, though we lost the match I guess we played well, I wish you had come to cheer me, he said.

I want to ask you something, Jay.

Yes, what is it, he replied.

Do you love me? Prajakta closed her eyes as she had posed a direct question.

It nearly took him 15 seconds and he said ‘yes’ I do.

Prajakta felt at ease after hearing a ‘yes’ and slept peacefully that night, little did she knew that the coming days would be merrier than she had thought.

The important day arrived and Prajakta met Jay for lunch followed by coffee. As he drove her home Prajakta felt that if I do not express it today I won’t say It ever, I should seize this moment and tell him. Jay, I need to tell you something. This created a tension around Jay and he almost found himself caught up with some fear. For the first time her throat felt blocked, but she cleared it and said Jay, I love you and she muddled while she expressed. Jay smiled and kept driving.

And the five-minute silence in the car made her uneasy. She feared losing Jay’s friendship and this was the sole reason for her not to bring down her walls. His car pulled into the driveway and he parked at the end of the driveway. He turned to Prajkata and smiled. He too felt the need to clear his throat, he blushed and said ‘I love you too’. It was 30th August a date engraved in golden. He asked if he could get a hug and they both hugged.

Jay, I need to tell you something, when you move to Canada, don’t worry about aunty if ever she needs me, remember I am just a call away. This filled Jay with ecstasy and he said, sure, and hugged her tighter than before and said I wasn’t wrong when I told the world that I love this girl. Jay had planned to introduce her to his friends over dinner. That evening Jay went out with his friends for ice cream and expressed to his friends that he had fallen in love. Guys, I need to tell you something, I seriously have fallen in love with a girl. They looked at his face with rather amusement and soon started enquiring about his love and how it sparked. He told his best friend, Priya, I want to propose to her, can you help me select a ring for the 10th dinner date. Jay meticulously planned his proposal.

It was 10th evening, Jay and Prajakta checked into their rooms and the time of proposal was almost near. She was clueless about what Jay had in store for her. He asked her to close her eyes and it bewildered her hugely. Funnily, Jay was hunting for the special surprise in his bag that he had been planning for ten days. He got it and hid it in his fist. He asked her to turn around and open her eyes.

As she opened her eyes she started looking around for the surprise and only upon coming near him she realized that it wasn’t flowers but Jay was standing with a ring. He could now read her face and could make out she’s absolutely blank and startled. Okay, even I am nervous. Don’t expect me to get on my knees, and he broke into a riot of laughter. He funnily, counted her fingers and asked her which finger? As he slid the ring into her last finger, Prajakta was exhilarated and just hugged him and said absolutely nothing. Jay took her on his lap and they kissed.

Late in the evening, Jay’s friends joined them for dinner and they both shared their experiences of life. Jay offered to drop her back home as it was too late and Prajakta agreed. Throughout his drive her eyes were fixed on him, it was the first time she didn’t fear looking into his eyes, and now without any fear. Her looking into his eyes was her way of telling that I do not fear being walked on.

She sank herself into his arms while he drove her home. They sang their favorite song and felt at peace. As she was about to get down of the car she said, ‘nobody has ever made me feel this special, I am not afraid to tell you that you are my life now’. They both wished they could hold the hands of the clock and make time wait.

I think you should go or else I won’t let you go, he smiled.

Yes, goodnight, she planted a kiss on his forehead.
