The Success Story Of A Tribal Woman In Gaining Literacy
Sanklibai is a tribal woman living with her three daughters and two sons. Many years ago, her husband died due to a snakebite. She then started labouring and brought up her children.
In 2000, she became a member of the Ekal Nari Shakti Sanghthan, where she knew how the Association strengthens the life of widows / single women. She attended a 10 days literacy camp and learnt to read and write. She gathered information about the rights of a widow. She opened a grocery shop and along with working in the shop, she continued to read and write.
After three months, her mother expired and she had to attend the follow-up training on literacy in Udaipur. She showed willingness to go to Udaipur but the villagers became angry saying that since her mother had expired, she had to take lead & perform the customs. But she replied "My mother is dead and I feel the sorrow. Whether I stay here or not, my mother can't come back. It will be better if I go to Udaipur and come back after attending the training."
Likewise she attended two follow-up camps of 5 days each. She then became a block committee member and started conducting block level meetings. She can write names, reports, maintain petty expenses, fill-up travel details & expenses, read books, newspapers, etc. all by herself.
Today, she is happy and is helping other people to become literate.
