The Destiny - Part II

The brother-in-law used to disturb Nasiban often. He told Nasiban“ You will not get anything from my elder brother. Please allow me once and you will deliver a child. I have tried many. So kindly consider my offer.” He smiled shamelessly. The vulgar smile of her brother-in-law was beyond any sense of decency. Nasiban could not complain against him to the blind mother-in-law or her husband Jumman. She wanted to tear off the face of her brother in law with her sharp nails to teach him a lesson for his misadventure.

The jokes between the brother-in-law and sister- in- law are not taken seriously in society. If she tells Jumman he may not like it. The blind mother-in-law has lost all reasoning power due to the love of her dear son. She was more interested to hear the laughter of young kids in her house. In this respect, she could not discriminate between good and bad, ethical or unethical, etc. She cursed her daughter in law for not producing children and encouraged her son for a second nikah. Her grievance was “Who will save the dynasty”?

Annoncer came once again and informed that the bus going to Shahdol was due to arrive. He asked passengers to collect their tickets and seat numbers.

Nasiban’s nap got disturbed. She snatched the packet of groundnuts from Muhuwa and kept inside a bag. She came out of the waiting room. She saw the woman too getting ready. Perhaps she was to go by the same bus. The humming sound of the bus was heard from a distance.

The agent and announcer were alert. The bus had arrived by then. Nasiban got the window seat in the ladies' section. She preferred fresh air. She used to get nausea due to the smoke of cigarettes or bidis. While traveling in winter also she used to keep the window open. Only when the people objected she closed the window. Still, she used to leave a small opening so as to get a fresh breeze.

No sooner she occupied her seat the other woman also came and sat by the side of hers along with her three children. A male had come to see her off. When he was about to leave she told the children,” Give Salaam to Mamu”.

Nasiban thought that she had probably come to the parental house for Eid. She sat by the side of Nasiban.

Nasiban greeted her with a smile. She too reciprocated with a smile. Her son was still crying. But the daughters were quiet. Nasiban thought generally the girls are quiet. There will be no wonder if we say that they are speechless. This speechlessness embolden them to bear all insults and injuries patiently. Nasiban was also a victim of speechlessness. Had she been outspoken she would have retaliated Jumman whenever he found fault with her. How patiently she had faced Jumman! The blind mother-in-law, being a woman, provoked him even to commit sin. Although Jumman did not say anything his indication to Nasiban was to beget children by any means.

Calling Nasiban a prostitute the mother–in–law said ” You pose like Sati Savitri and put the blame on your brother-in-law. You bring the family matter to the street. You better go. I shall show you how Jumman becomes a father with children.

Nasiban retaliated,” Your son is incapable of anything. He is unfit to produce a child or have a wife”.

“You sterile woman!. Even stone will melt if a woman desires. She can produce children like goats and bitches every year. Your womb is not strong.”

"No mother, No one can clap by one hand. Believe me, your son is not of any use except for Roza –Namaaz. He speaks sweet, keeps smiling, so don’t conclude that he is a man. How to say that Jumman is a hijra or impotent?"

Mother-in-law felt sorry for making Nasiban her daughter-in-law." My sister-in-law is my enemy who has ditched me by bringing such an alliance. By bringing you to this family she has taken sweet revenge and there is no way to escape but to carry the burden throughout my lifetime. But I will not die without feeding my grandchildren. I have consulted Hazrat Ji. He had said that there was no objection in going for second, third or up to the fourth nikah to get a child. I have already seen a girl. But this Joru Ka Gulam has to say yes. The very next day I shall fix his second nikah".

Nasiban got annoyed and said "Bring a pregnant woman. She must be pregnant for a month and a half. If she brings a child from her mother’s house it will be better. Or else she may have to suffer childlessness like me "
