Welcome to Florida, the most f#@#ed up state

Yes, I live in Florida and have been here for the last 30 years, and I have seen a lot of changes. Mostly not good, the traffic is horrendous, there are no more fields or cow pastures anymore, too many tourists, and the price to live down here is astronomical.

So I know I get some from the peanut gallery saying, so leave! I would move in a heartbeat but my girls are here so for now I am stuck but the more years I stay the more I realize that the beach is just not enough to make me love this place anymore.

Especially these last few years with covid and our governor Deathsantis, who, despite the world closing down, decided that we are still open for business. Come on down with your sick self; you don't have to have a vaccine card; hell, you don't even have to wear a mask; just come on down and infect us all.

Now, his newest and dumbest stunt is that children don't have to wear their masks at school. It's bad enough that our school system is one of the worst in the country. Now he's trying to kill off the teachers we have left who are willing to work being hugely unpaid. Yes, as big as Florida is, the teachers here are the lowest paid compared to any other city in our country.

Oh, and while we are at it, let's make it a law that we are no longer allowed to teach critical race theory in our schools. For those of you who are unaware, it is an academic concept based on the idea that racism is not about individual people’s prejudice but the racism that is embedded in the United States.

Because God forbid we own what we have done as a country and learn from our mistakes. No, let's not teach the acts of hate and of crimes our world did or watched.

Let's pretend we didn't come and steal this land from the Native Americans that we put them in tiny reservations that we tried to make them extinct.

Let's sweep it under the rug that 6 million Jewish people lost their lives in the holocaust and we sat back for years watching.

Or that black people were slaves that were brought here, that they had no rights. That they were and still are treated unfairly hundreds of years later.

No, let's not ever talk about it, and it will go away.

I was shocked when my daughter came home from college and told me that she had no idea the depths of what we did to black people because she was never taught that in school. She was taking a class in college about Black history, and it was only there she learned.

Teaching it in college is great, but that is an elective, and by that point, you already have your own mindset of these things. We need to teach our young children early; they need to know how we screwed up as a country and as people. They won't even be able to learn this in college because "Deathsantis" is trying to get rid of it in colleges as well.

Look, everyone makes mistakes, and mistakes are good because it teach us to do better or try harder the next time. We need to know and teach these things so we can correct them and not make the same mistakes.

This state needs to change; we need to be known for more than beautiful beaches. We need to take a stand, be responsible, and be a state that people are proud to live in. We need to protect our people, our teachers, and especially our children who are so impressionable.

We need to remember all of this next voting period and make a change we want to see…
