The bright sunlight roared aloud bringing out a sparkle of hope in Hazel's deep chocolatey eyes while she wandered alone on the footwalk. She was lost in a whirlpool of thoughts trying to analyse her daily tasks when suddenly an unexpected friend joined her.

"Hey Hazel". Her world froze on hearing that voice. She knew exactly who it was. Her heartbeat increased when their eyes gazed upon each other.

"Hi Dean, what's up?", she managed to say without making it obvious that she absolutely did not have the tiniest bit of feelings for the stunning jock walking alongside her.

"Nothing really, I just thought I'd walk with you", he said.

"Oh alright", she said trying to keep it together.

Dean was as usual teasing her playfully while they both joked around and made small talk. Hazel had been waiting to pop a question but she was affirmative he'd say no. Her overconscious mind told her things would go south. However, she was ready to risk their entire friendship over one question, rather never do it and live with disappointment.

"Do you wanna go out for ice cream?", she asked him bracing herself, the skin between her temples tightening, waiting to hear a solid no and----

"Yeah, c'mon let's go", he spoke up. He seemed very chill about it. Hazel appeared awestruck at Dean's reaction. She didn't expect him to say yes, that too instantly considering the fact they were "just friends".

"He's probably just being friendly", silently spoke her mind while her heart disappeared in a corner.

Even if it was a genuinely friendly gesture, it didn't matter. To her, it didn't matter whether he liked her back or not. What mattered was that they were good friends and she valued their friendship dearly.

She'd do anything to keep their friendship alive even if it meant she'd have to love him from a distance...and that started the greatest war the mind and heart could ever have.
