The Story Of Kalyan

Every disciple must follow his Guru’s orders and fulfill his requests when needed. Even if they can be life-taking, whatever the Guru says is to be done.

Kalyan’s story represents the true devotion of a disciple towards his Guru, who is ready to do anything for him.

The ashram not so big, was full of sages, disciples and positive vibes. But the one in most attention was a young boy, Kalyan.

He was the Guru’s favorite one and would always make him proud. He did all the Guru asked him to and never made him upset. All the other disciples were jealous of him and disliked him. However, this did not perturb Kalyan at all. The Guru knew about this and wanted to teach them all a lesson.

One day he told everyone that he was going out for a walk in the nearby forest and asked them to have the wood cut, water collected and food made before he returned. Everyone got to the job.

When he returned he had a big sore on his thigh. He said that he had hurt himself by a thorn while collecting flowers for a pooja.

Kalyan felt sad for him while the other disciples, seemed to have forgotten about it.

The next day, when it was time to teach, the Guru with a very happy voice said,”I have got to know how to get rid of this hurt.” He continued, “I will tear this sore from one side and if anyone drinks whatever is inside it, it will heal in no time!” Everyone looked at each other with disgust. “God knows what stinky thing would be inside that, and Guruji is asking us to drink it!” they thought.

On the other hand, Kalyan was overjoyed with happiness knowing that his Guru would recover.

“So, who will do it for me?” asked the Guru. Of course no one stood up but Kalyan. The Guru knew it.

He tore the sore from one side and Kalyan, drank it all while the others continued to make disgusted faces.

He got up and touched the Guru’s feet with a big smile on his face; and the Guru gave him his blessings.

The other disciples were speechless. They asked Kalyan about it but he just gave a smile and waved off. The Guru knew that everyone was shocked and were getting full of curiosity day by day.

Finally one day, the Guru said,” I have observed that you all want to know why Kalyan didn’t have even the slightest expression of revulsion after drinking the…you know.”

A little boy said,”Yes Guruji. In fact he was smiling!”

“I guess it’s time to open up”, said the Guru. “I had noticed that all of you had envy for Kalyan and were not friendly to him just because he was my beloved disciple.”

“Umm… Yes Guruji. We were. He is of the same age as us but was the one who made you proud so….”

“He is not my favorite for no reason. He is ready to do whatever I ask him to, whatever. But it seems you never understood. So I tested you all.”

“Tested? What do you mean?”

“That day when I went to the forest, I hadn’t hurt myself at all.”

“What! So where did that sore come from?”

“Which sore?”

“Guruji, the sore on your thigh. Which you tore and Kalyan drank whatever was inside.”

The Guru smiled and said, “To test you, I narrated a false story. And I had never had a sore. I just stuck a mango to my thigh.”

“What! So it wasn’t a sore!”

“No! And Kalyan actually drank the juice of the fruit!
