The Power Of Sai Baba's Udi

Udi is the ash from the dhuni which Sai Baba had lit by his yogic powers, in Shirdi. And it has kept burning ever since.

Udi or ash is the purest substance on earth and has tremendous powers and is the result of sacrifices offered to fire (Agni) which purifies everything by destroying whatever is evil. Performing 'Yagha' (Dhuni) is the most pious ritual recommended in the ancient Vedic literature written by the great sages in the past. The Udi has all the powers of Baba. It has cured many mental and physical ailments of thousands of persons. Some real-life instances are as follows.

A doctor's nephew had a bone-cancer. The doctor had tried all types of remedies, including surgical operation, but did not succeed. The nephew was in much pain. Finally, the doctor brought him to Sai Baba. Sai Baba placed his divine glance on the wound and applied Udi on it. Within one week, the boy was completely cured of cancer!

Another doctor had a swelling in his leg caused by guinea-worms and it caused him immense pain. He approached Baba with a request to release him from his mortal body and thus end his agony once and for all. Baba applied Udi to his leg daily. One day Sai Baba's attendant named Abdul inadvertently stepped on the doctor's affected leg. The result was that the wound burst open and all the seven guinea-worms came out of it. The doctor first cried in pain but after some time he was relieved and began to sing in praise of Baba.

Nanasaheb Chandorkar was another devotee of Baba. He was a mamlatdar at Jamner, about 24 miles from Jalgaon in Khandesh.

Nanasabeb's daughter, Maina had come to Jamner for delivery. For forty-eight hours, she was in labor and her life was in grave danger. Nanasaheb was desperately appealing to Baba to come to her succor. Sai Baba 'heard' it.

Ramgir, a devotee of Sai Baba, was then inspired to go to his village in Khandesh. He came to ask for Baba's permission. Baba said, "Yes. Start immediately. But first go to Nanasaheb at Jamner, give him Udi and Arati, and then proceed for home". Baba gave him a packet of Udi from the dhuni with his own hands and the Arati on a piece of paper to be recited at Maina's bedside. Ramgir took the two things, but asked in anxiety, "Baba, I have only two rupees with me. With this much. I can barely go to Jalgaon. But how could I make a reach to Jamner and then to my native place ?" Sai Baba said to him not to worry at all. He further added, "You only go to Jalgaon. Everything will be arranged thereafter."

With firm faith in Baba, Ramgir started his journey. He had to pay Rs. 1-14-0 for railway ticket and only two annas were left with him. Around midnight the train reached Jalgaon and Ramgir got down the train. Just then a sepoy in Khaki uniform approached him and enquired whether he was Ramgir from Shirdi. Ramgir said he definitely was. Then he asked him to come along with him. He said that Nanasaheb had sent him with a tonga in order to take him to his place. Ramgir thought that as Baba had hinted, he must have sent a word to Nanasaheb and asked him to make these arrangements. The sepoy gave him a few snacks on the way, which he said, was also sent by Nanasaheb. Finally, the tonga arrived at Jamner by dawn. The sepoy, pointing to a distant 'building, said, "That is Nanasaheb's office." Ramgir alighted there to ease himself and went behind a bush. But as he came out  the sepoy had gone with his carriage and horses. All had disappeared. Dumbfounded, he went to Nanasaheb's office and, obtaining Nanasabeb's address, went there. Saluting Nanasaheb, he said, "Baba has sent me here from Shirdi and has given you these things."

Nanasaheb was very pleased on hearing this. He said, 'Oh Baba, Baba! What should I say to you? I called your name here and hearing my call in Shirdi, you at once sent me your miraculous Udi! A million pranams to you O Saibaba ! "

Nanasaheb applied the Udi to his daughter's foreheas and gave her a little Udi to drink by mixing it in a glass of water. Then the Aarti was recited by her bedside.

In half an hour, Maina delivered safely. All were very pleased. Nanasabeb thanked him profoundly. Then Ramgir asked, "Nanasaheb, your tonga brought me to Jamner all right. But when I got down to ease myself, it suddenly vanished. Where are that tonga and the sepoy?"

"Which tonga ?" asked the puzzled Nanasaheb. "Your tonga which you had sent for me to Jalgaon Station. Your sepoy met me there and he gave me your delicious snacks and brought me here with great speed."

With tears of gratitude, Nanasaheb said, "Ramgir, I had not the slightest idea that you were coming. So how could I have sent Tonga to pick you up? All this is done by Saibaba himself. He assumed the form of the sepoy in order to help his devotee!

Later, Nanasaheb himself had related this whole incident to the people assembled at Shirdi.

So much about the spiritual implication of Udi, but it also has its material significance. It provides health, prosperity, freedom from anxiety, and many other benefits. So the Udi has helped us to gain in material as well as spiritual aspects.

There are many such stories that show the power and efficacy of Saibaba's Udi. Even if one applies sand by invoking Saibaba, when Udi is not available, the sand becomes Udi, possessing its miraculous properties!

Om Sai Ram!
