Gracy had developed a strong notion that love, marriage, friendship, companionship, all these give only pain and had vowed never to allow herself to feel any emotion for anybody at all to save herself from the associated heartache.

The dark clouds had started hovering the horizon since she was a kid and had been cajoled ( rather ordered) by her parents to sleep in her own room, darker than the darkest clouds with creepy creatures under her bed which tormented her by infiltrating into her dreams every night.

At first, the hushed arguments had started between her parents which had turned into shouting matches with abuses and objects hurled at each other, breaking of utensils, and slamming of doors. She used to peep out of the room due to inquisitiveness to see what was happening in the beginning days but then she decided to firmly shut down her ears and surrender herself to her regular nightmares accompanied by screaming and crying, which was much more preferable.

Her father used to vanish for a long time after slamming the front door till that fateful stormy night came when she was waiting for her father's return, but the police officers had rung the bell and had announced the news of her father's fatal accident in the slippery cliffside.

Her mother had found it impossible to stay in that house and locality henceforth and she sold everything and shifted and shifted and shifted from one place to another searching for peace or running away from guilt and loneliness, she wondered, indulging herself in all sorts of intoxications and vices that she had accused her father of.

Any sort of friendship, acquaintance, or anything of that sort had been impossible in this type of vagabond lifestyle, when her mother and grandparents dumped her time and again in each other's custody, as per their own convenience and time table of vacations or other obligations.

Thus ended school, without any experience of the joys of school life at all because of her frequent transfers from one school to another every few months or at least once a year. So she was an out and out loner, with the defensive mechanisms of rough behavior and a cold invisible wall to repel everyone who tried to come close, moving around with an ' I don't care' attitude and little diary literally glued to her hand by a rubber band to jot down anything and everything that occurred to her mind.

After school was finished, she was dumped with her grandparents in the small seaside town, the only other alternative being, going to a summer camp with strangers while her mother spent a quality vacation for her rejuvenation from the burnt-out working life, in Florida.

Gracy embraced her solitude and literally dragged her boredom filled life there because she had never learned to observe and appreciate the beauty of nature.

Her grandparents were living a very frugal life by selling decorative pieces made from sea products like shells, pearls, and corals. So they were unable to give her any pocket money or even a cycle.

Gracy had to endure her share of eve-teasings and catcalls as every newcomer to a small town had to. She had never realized that she had grown up into a gorgeous young lady.

While wandering aimlessly in the lonely deserted sea beach one evening, her depressive thoughts dragged her into the waves, deeper and deeper till she lost consciousness...
