The Crystal Earrings

A little girl was crouched under the table. The little girl burst into tears rocking her body back and forth, waiting for that one person to come, to make it all go away but instead all she gets is a box. Wiping her tears she reads her aunt's name on the box and opens it with her dainty little fingers.

Inside, in a soft cushion are gently laid purple earrings, crystal in design and when she wore them, crystal in character. A note was placed under the cushion, with the neatest handwriting - a trademark feature of her mother's family.

It said, "Dearest Anu,

I know Arya pulled your ponytail in class again, don't worry she is jealous of your luscious, long hair. I also heard Mumma doesn't want you wearing makeup, nothing personal, it's just that she never looked good with it (don't tell her I said that).

Papa asked you to not speak in front elders. Nevermind sweetie, they don't deserve your innocent, transparent opinions anyway.

And yes Neha, that sister of yours! If she ever orders you around again, threaten to hide her favourite kameez. That does always work, no?

But beta, now do something about yourself. Your fears, your aspirations and most importantly your emotions. I can save you from predictable evils but not from yourself.
