Someone told me, love is the only thing which works the best, rest is false promises, ma never told me what happened to father, I pretended he is at work and one day will come back with new clothes and a smiling face. Mom has a habit of sitting on the verandah and smoking chillum and talk about paranormal things - all widows used to do that and gawk at her.

I sit at the corner with legs folded, trying to understand- I may listen to her at the beginning but the interesting part gets tangled up and lose track and fall asleep.

The moment I open my eyes I am lying on the bed with a bedsheet on me and she slept on the floor with her favorite pillow tucked carefully, it is 9 pm we go to sleep.

The next morning mom gets up first, her pillow and chatai placed at the right place, she has gone for work, she is a sweeper in a government school, the tea is covered with a plate and my breakfast is also placed carefully,

I drink the tea and eat- start to read my Hindi book which master ji gave us an assignment for while rummaging my basta I see a dead butterfly which I trapped yesterday while back, it was trampled and took his last breath in my bag. I removed it and threw it outside the window, the wind gushed in and the butterfly disappeared without being noticed.

I bathed, the water is cold so I put water closing my eye and don’t apply soap and come running by my body dripping water, Harish groans from outside we are getting late, I apply oil and we start sauntering towards the unfinished road, which gets scary in the evening so we come before 5.

Harish’s father is a farmer, and he hardly gets time to study, he’s family is against him studying but my mother is hard-pressed of him enrolling he sometimes gets beaten up as he gets completes his homework, there are marks all over his body- he tries to hide it but I saw once when we went for a swimming in the river.

It was 5 pm and we are running late, Harish wanted to see butterflies and I will like to squeeze them,

He says they look free from everything and also calls being a human is a burden, he says it is a matter of factly way.

I did not squeeze the butterfly this time,

We were late and the lights are going dark so we decided to run and reach home- and the strange animal's sounds can be heard from all around,

The road is cold and we are shivering with our torn shoes, I realize mom must be waiting home.

As we are walking we heard something is coming towards us, Harish and I was shivering just wanted to be home and sleep cozily- but the home looks far, what is approaching us walking more further. We looked at each other and ran without looking back.

The thing kept running, with the same speed as we did- Harish began chanting god’s name.

He thought it will make it go away, but on the run and an open mouth made us slow.

He sat down and panted for air,

Let’s go, I told Harish with a fumbling tone

I can’t, he again took short breaths

When I gazed back, I can hear that thing is slowing down, unlike us.

Let’s go we can’t sit, it will be completely dark soon, then Harish began to cry,

His voice was loud- there was the rustling of the wind – I saw hyena peeping from a bush,

The peculiar sound, my heart was stomping, I was wailing and to leave him alone is dangerous. But my heart didn’t allow me to leave him stranded.

I pulled a rock, and stick and I started making loud noises.

I couldn’t believe my voice can reach that pitch, a voice of survival.

Haresh stood up, and I saw his leg oozing blood, and it was dripping all the way from the school.

We kept walking, and it stopped following us, was it my voice which stopped it. I wonder?

We were near, I heard a clamoring- as I saw on my right a big man bear body with its tongue out, walking along with us.

The sight of him, 6 feet tall man with its tongue out scared the shit out of me,

My chappal broke into two, my legs scratched I ran for life

We reached home and mom was not sitting on the verandah
