Shanti

As he got off the bus at midnight, he saw groups of people huddled together, warming themselves near the fire. It took him back to those days when as a kid he had done the same with Shanti, his best friend. They had both been traded as bonded labor to the local zamindar by their families. They were family to each other and spent all their free time together. 

And then one night it all changed. The intoxicated men came in a jeep and took Shanti away. He tried his best to fight them all, but he was no match for them given his size. He never found her again, though he had looked everywhere. And then at the first opportunity, he ran away to the big city. 

Today, he worked with various NGOs, his main intention to save all the little Shantis who had never had a chance before.
