This is a very short story where you read in the POV of a person named Eric who makes journal entries addressed to Sarah.

Chapter 1

Dear Sarah,

You left me. After putting me and my family through hell, you decided to leave me. You didn't just leave me, you broke my heart and now I'm lost. I don't think I can forgive you.

-Eric

Chapter 2

It’s been two months since I last saw you. It was hard in the beginning but now, I’ve moved on. I still remember you sometimes and miss you. My life hasn't been the same without you. Bad days or good days, I would come back home to your warm hugs. You cheered me up even on the worst of my days. Now I am greeted by solitude and the memories that you left behind. Home isn’t home without you.

-Eric

Chapter 3

I passed by our childhood favorite hangout today, the toy shop. Memories from the times when we were young filled my thoughts. We could never decide on the same toy and somehow managed to get what we needed within the budget. We’d come back home after that and I’d decide to lend you all my toys. The happiness on your face was priceless. I smiled thinking of the days when we grew up together.

-Eric

Chapter 4

I had a rough day today. I came home exhausted and angry. There was no one to cheer me up. I remembered you. You never cared about my grades, status, money, and my moods like the rest of the world. I could always count on you. So why did you have to disappear when I needed you the most? Your company was the best that I could ever have. Your love was so unconditional.

-Eric

Chapter 5

I met the doctor today on my way to work. We spoke casually for some time and he expressed his condolences. He was genuinely sorry. I guess he was expecting you to live too after trying everything in his power to treat you. You left so many people disappointed and sad, Sarah. But we still love you and miss you. Hope you are happy wherever you are.

-Eric

Chapter 6

Ah, the season of festivals again. Sitting on the porch and looking at the sky full of crackers, I couldn’t help but remember and miss you a little more than usual today. You hated firecrackers. You groaned every time the festival night approached and complained so much about people being so insensitive. Actually, you were a real scaredy-cat. You wouldn’t let go of me and I had to talk to you soothingly to drown out the cracker noises till you fell asleep on my lap. Somehow, that brought us closer.

-Eric

Chapter 7

I brought home to Emily today. She was at my mom’s place during the time I was still grieving over your death. She has beautiful big, brown eyes just like yours. In a lot of ways, she’s you. I’m happy about that. A part of you resides in her. I promise you, I will take care of her and watch over her as she grows up. Do you know she loves evening strolls, slow music, and afternoon naps just like you? I wish you were here to teach her and look after her.

-Eric

Chapter 8

Emily and I visited your grave today. I simply stared at the headstone as memories drowned me down. Emily played around. Of course, she doesn’t know this is where you were buried. She has no idea who you are because she never met you. After all, I brought her home six months after you died. I’m placing these white tiny flowers from our garden for you. You always uprooted them. I could never tell if it was because you liked or hated them. I want to tell you that you will never be forgotten. You were and still are my best friend. I also brought your favorite treat. I promise to visit you often.

-Eric

I brushed off the dust on the tombstone and read the words engraved on it, “Sarah, the best dog that ever lived.”
