At the end of Treta yuga, when Lord Vishnu went back to Vaikuntha, his abode in the Kshir Sagara, after completing his incarnation of Rama and killing the demon king Ravana, all the gods along with Mother Earth and Lord Brahma went to see him and express their gratitude to Him for taking so much pain for them in order to kill Ravana. When they arrived at Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu was sleeping on a large serpent and Goddess Laxmi was pressing his legs. Seeing Him sleep, Lord Brahma and gods decided to wait for him, but hardly a moment had passed when Lord Vishnu opened his eyes and asked them the reason for their arrival. At this, Brahmaji along with other gods and Goddess Earth folded hands their hands and sang His praise. Lord Vishnu was pleased to hear that and promised to help them in the future also. All the gods were very happy to get that promise from Him. In that congregation, there was also a saint from the earth. Goddess Earth had taken him along too to represent all the saints of earth. Seeing him standing behind all and in a thoughtful mood, Lord Vishnu called him near and asked the reason of his being so thoughtful. The monk then very politely said,” O Lord of Lords!

You are the creator and destroyer of this entire universe. The Vedas sing your praise by calling you omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent. There is nothing that you cannot do just by wishing for it. However, in your recent incarnation of Rama, you took birth as a human and had to go through so much pain and so much anguish. I want to know, O Supreme Soul, that when you were able to kill Ravana just by your wish, why then you went through all the sufferings of life. O, Lord! It gave us a lot of pain to see your feet bleed on the stony and thorny paths of the jungle, and when you along with your younger brother Lakshman were wandering from one jungle to another in search of Devi Sita, it was just unbearable.” Lord Vishnu patiently listened to his question, then lovingly putting his blissful hand on his head said, “You all may be thinking I took my last incarnation for killing Ravana, but it is not true. It was not at all meant for killing Ravana but it meant giving a lesson to the common man that if they have will power and pursue the path of truth, then there is nothing in this universe that is impossible for him.” After saying this, He smiled at Brahmaji and resumed, “I see that, in future, earthlings will he have to face much bigger problems than all the demons I have killed in the battle against Ravana, as Life, then, will be threatened by new and unconquerable demons that taking the size of microbes will attack the mankind to completely wipe out their race from the earth. Ravana was nothing in comparison to such invisible demons.” He again cast his magical eyes on all the gods and continued, “The purpose of my incarnation as Rama was not to kill Ravan but to make the common man realize their hidden powers and give them a lesson that if they truthfully try, they too can conquer even the impossible. A disciplined lifestyle along with a positive approach towards life will be two important tools for survival of man in the future.” Saying this, Lord Vishnu took leave of them and went back to His bed of Serpent God. There were infinite peace and tranquility on his face. After this, Lord Brahma and gods returned to their abodes and got involved in their work.
