'Ahem,' I cleared my throat. That got everyone's attention pretty quick. They all stopped whatever they were doing and listened to me, the Club leader.

'Look,' I said, 'lately, our numbers and morale is down. We need to quickly regroup, or the others will overtake us. Now, we can't let that happen.'

Everyone murmured their approval. I nodded. 'Let's get started on our float, and do our best!' I cheered. Everyone got up and trudged to he garage where we kept our float.

So much for enthusiasm.

I sighed. Once he had left, everything was just falling apart.

Whoa, wait. I'll explain.

My name is Sophia Connors, and I live in the small town of Driggs. Life was boring, repeating the same cycle over and over. School, homework, club, play, social media, video games, movies. True, it was entertaining, but boring, nevertheless.

Until that fateful day.

Until that day, when a person named Sam Pruhert entered my life.

It started out normal. He was a new student, who just moved in. The first day he came, girls were swooning over him. All the guys were immediately friends. But after he'd rejected every girl in school (except me, I'm not interested in that kind of stuff) and became friends with the nerdiest bunch he could find, he caught my attention.

Why was he like this?

He could easily be the most popular guy in school, but yet he chose to be invisible. I mean, not invisible, a guy with looks like that could never be invisible, but you get my point.

The first day we came, he immediately signed up for the TSA, the Technology Student Association, which I was head of. THe first time we met, was to discuss his eligibility to enter the club.

'Hey,' I greeted him and sat opposite him. 'Sorry I'm late. You're Sam, right? You applied to be in the TSA?'

He grinned. 'That's me,' he said. I took out a few sheets of paper. Most of them were quiz sheets, and once was his application form.

'Let's see,' I said, 'In your previous school, you were the.... head of TSA, and of the History Club and the captain of the Football team?'

He nodded. I raised my eyebrows. 'Impressive,' I said. 'Moving on.... what do you want to achieve by being a member of the TSA?'

'I would like to discover new forums, work on my ideas and keep up the good work.'

I nodded. 'Okay,' I said. 'Why do you think you're different from the other people in the group?'

He smirked. 'I'm smarter.'

I gave a look saying "seriously?"

He gave me a smug smile.

I rolled my eyes.

'You do know that these answers determine whether you get in or not, right?'

'Yes.'

'Then you'd better get rid of that smug attitude and be serious, that is, if you actually want in. Just because you were the leader in your previous school doesn't mean you get in in this school.'

I looked at him sternly. He gave a salute and said, 'Yes ma'am!'

I rolled my eyes. This guy was hilarious.

'Okay, next question,' I said.

After the questions and the quiz was over, I told him to leave and come tomorrow. After he left, I took a look at his quiz sheets.

I gasped.

Every single answer was correct!

In that case, he had scored even better than me, because I , being the leader, had got one wrong in the entrance test.

I called him, using the number on the admission form.

'Hey,' I said.

'Hi,' he replied. 'So, how was my result?'

I rolled my eyes. Smug bastard.

'You know,' I said, 'even if you aced the test, I'm considering not letting you in because of your attitude.'

He laughed, but it was mostly out of fear.

'So?' he asked. 'Am I in?'

I sighed.

'Yes,' I said. 'You're in.'

'YES!'

I laughed. 'We meet every Tuesday and Thursday evenings after school in the conference room. Don't be late for the meeting tomorrow.'

'Yes, ma'am.'

I cut the call.

I grabbed my bag and walked out of school, making sure I locked the room I had used.

I plugged my earphones in and took the usual route home.

'Mind if I walk with you?'

I jumped.

'Sam, what are you doing here?' I hissed. 'You're supposed to be at least a mile away by now!'

He gave his signature smirk.

'But, I'm not,' He said.

'I can see that,' I replied. 'I got you in, what do you want now?'

He gave me a hurt expression.

'I just wanted to walk with you,' He said.

'Uh, okay....' I replied.

What was this guy up to?

'So,' he said, 'how long have you been the leader of the TSA?'

'A little less than a year.'

'Do you like Physics?'

'Yes.'

'Maths?'

'Yeah.'

'Chemistry.'

'Not so much. Why are you even asking me this?'

'Because I want to get to know you.'

'Why?'

'Geez, you have a lot of questions.'

'Oh really? Weren't you the one naming a hundred different subjects?'

'See? You just proved my point. And I named only three, not a hundred.'

I rolled my eyes and stormed away from him.

'Hey,' he called, catching up with me. 'Don't be mad. Please.'

'Yeah?' I asked. 'That's a little difficult, considering how annoying you are.'

He pouted. 'I'm annoying?' he asked.

'Yes,' I snapped. 'And I have better things to do than waste time and breath talking to you, and since I'm home, I can do those things. So, bye!'

I opened the gate, and just as I was about to stalk up the driveway, he caught my arm.

'Sorry,' he said.

I sighed. 'It's fine,' I said, smiling. 'I'll see you in school tomorrow.'

I smiled and nodded. 'Bye,' he said.

I closed the gate and walked up the driveway.

'Who was that hottie?!' My sister exploded, once I had closed the front door.

'Shut up, Dan. He's my friend,' I said. My sister, Danica, who's currently in the seventh grade, pouted.

'I wish I was in high school,' she said. 'then I could date whoever I want and not care about anyone else.'

I laughed. 'It isn't that simple,' I said. I grabbed a piece of toast and headed to my room.

**The next day**

'Okay, guys,' I said, sitting at the head of the conference room table. 'We should welcome our newest member, Sam.'

Heads turned as Sam entered the room, a smirk plastered on his face.

'Okay, that's enough,' I snapped. Everyone turned their attention back to me.

'Today, we will be deciding the theme of our float, which we will be building like we do every year, for the annual float festival. Any suggestions?'

Sam raised his hand.

'Yes, Sam?' I asked.

'How about Into the Future?' he said.

'What do you mean?' Connor, a member of the club, asked.

'I mean,' Sam replied, 'how about we set the float for the future, where cyborgs and time travelling exists, and humans will have colonized on other planets?'

We all thought about it.

'It's not bad,' I said. 'Any other suggestions?'

This time Sarah, another member of the club, raised her hand.

'How about the Butterfly Effect?' she asked.

I sighed. 'That thought crossed my mind,' I said, 'but we need the people to understand what the float's about. And plus, not everyone has seen that movie.'

She nodded.

'Any other ideas?' I asked. Nobody said anything.

'Well, so it's decided,' I said. 'Into the Future it is. We thank our newest member, Sam, for the idea.'

Everyone clapped.

'Now,' I said, 'we will be meeting everyday after school to work on the float. The festival is a month from now. Okay? I'll see you guys tomorrow. some other students have also volunteered to help us. See ya!'

Everyone left.

I locked up and left myself.

I jumped when Sam materialized next to me.

Literally, materialized. He was nowhere to be seen a second before.

'Hey,' he said.

'Hey,' I replied. 'Come to annoy me on my walk home?'

'You bet.'

And so, that's how life went.

Soon, I realized that Sam wasn't the smug bastard he pretended to be. He was actually a kind, caring, funny person, and I really liked him.

Soon, we began meeting everyday without fail, even after the TSA meetings.

And soon after that, we started dating.

Finally, the day of the float festival came.

Could you believe so much had happened in just one month?

Our float was easily the best in school.

Everyone came to gawk at it, and we even had to cover it so that no one could damage it.

On the day of the float festival, Sam called pulled me aside.

'Are you ready?' he asked. 'This is all we've worked on for the past month. And, I can see you're extremely jittery. Wassup?'

'Nothing,' I replied. 'Just excited.'

He pulled me in for a hug.

'Me too,' he said.

I pulled back and put my hand in his.

'Come on,' I said.. 'Time to get into our cyborg costumes!'

We quickly dressed up and got into position on our float.

Me in front, waving robotically, Sam and Connor behind me, ready to fight with future laser guns, Sarah and the other five in different modes of research in the corner made like a mini colony on Mars.

I was extremely proud of our float. A lot of hard work had been out to in, and it would all be paid off now.

'And now, from the Technology Student Association, Into the Future!'

Our float moved. I continued waving robotically. It was kinda fun.

Once the showcase was over, Sam pulled me aside again.

'You did amazing,' he said. 'You did too,' I said.

'Listen,' he said. I need to tell you something.'

'The winner is.... Into the Future!'

Everyone cheered.

'We won!' I shouted. I and my team walked on stage and collected our prize, which was a cash reward of 2,000 dollars. I had already decided to use it to fund our further research.

'Thank you,' I told the host. We walked offstage

'We won!' I shouted. We did a large group hug.

'We're going to celebrate, now!' I said. Everyone cheered and we walked off towards a restaurant.

And life went on.

Until one day, six months later, he disappeared.

I waked out of my house, expecting Sam to be there, as usual, waiting to drive me to school.

We weren't there, so I just assumed he was running late or something.

I walked to school. The bell rang.

He wasn't there then either.

Was he sick or something?

During the break, I checked my phone. No text, no calls.

I tried calling him. It went straight to voicemail.

I left one telling him to call me back.

The school day got over.

Still no sign.

Nothing the next day, either.

I then decided to ask my homeroom teacher if he had called in sick. She looked at me in pity.

'He and his parents shifted out of the States,' she said. 'They did that just yesterday.'

I looked at her in shock and horror. I didn't say anything, just walked away. Walked home.

'Where's Sam?' Dan asked me. I just ignored her and walked up to my room.

I found a note there. On my bed.

I opened it. It read-

"I'm sorry, I love you. Sam."

I sunk to the floor, sobbing.

How could he leave me?

I was depressed for two weeks after that.

But then I understood.

He was just another memory to forget.
