Arjun Sharma was having peculiar experiences for the past one week. It had all begun last Monday, June 22, which was when the teacher asked him for an explanation for not doing the homework and all that came out of Arjun’s mouth was a growl.

Then, on Tuesday during the biology period when ma’am was talking about the human body, Arjun started scratching his body uncontrollably and made himself the laughing stock of the whole class.

Next, on Wednesday when Arjun’s classmate offered him a toffee, Arjun snatched it and chewed the whole thing including the wrapper and then spit it out.

Later on Thursday, he couldn’t keep his tongue back inside his mouth after he finished brushing, it just kept sticking out and so Arjun had to miss school and meet a doctor to check if he had rabies and also to put his tongue back in, which the doctor told had happened because of a “tongue muscle sprain.”

Then, in the running race on Friday, Arjun, who was usually slow, had won the race by running with four legs!

And finally, yesterday, Saturday, when his cousin brother tried to tickle him, Arjun bit him.

This had all been too weird for Arjun, he tried to explain the feelings he had experienced to his parents but they scolded him and considered it to be an excuse for mischief. They scolded and shouted at him, “Your grounded Arjun, You dint have to bite your brother to make him stop tickling you! What kind of childish behaviour is this?!” Little did his parents know that Arjun had no control of whatever he was doing; it was as if something was controlling him from inside whenever it happened.

The next day, Sunday, today, Arjun locked his room and made up his mind to not go out until he discovered why this was happening to him and what he was slowly turning into.

He slowly wrote on a piece of paper…” Growling, Scratching, Chewing abnormally, Running abnormally, long tongue/”tongue muscle sprain” and Biting..” these all seemed like the characteristics of a dog or a monkey or a wolf.

Wolf!

All of a sudden, Arjun realized a connection. He remembered reading a book about a boy who was slowly turning into a wolf because he had got a syndrome called lupus syndrome, and when the boy turned back to normal he would forget everything that happened the previous night.

All these peculiar experiences had started from the day he returned the book to the school library. Maybe his body had started behaving like a wolf…or maybe he was a werewolf all along and never knew it! Maybe Arjun immediately unlocked his room and ran to his mother and asked, “Mom, are we all secretly wolves?” to which his mother replied, “I think you’re going crazy Arjun, you better start eating your breakfast before you turn completely mad!”

So no, his mother was not a werewolf…but maybe his dad was one…

”Dad, I think I’ve started to behave like the real you now...” said Arjun trying to give his father an indication. “You mean less childish and more serious?” asked his father. “No, I mean… like a wolf!”

Arjun was grounded for a longer time for “joking around and acting childish.” It was Sunday night now and so far Arjun had not had any abnormal experiences for the whole day. Arjun looked at the full moon in the sky and closed his window shut. He put a baby toy near his bed as he lay down. This was what Arjun called the werewolf trap…if Arjun really was a werewolf he would wake up at midnight and squeeze the baby toy as he stepped out and then open his window and probably jump out. If Arjun was not a werewolf, he considered it safe for him to go to school the next day. Arjun’s heart was beating as fast as a bullet train as he tried to sleep. It was difficult to sleep as he was excited but scared at the same time. Would the werewolf trap work? There was only one way to find out …

Sleep.

The next day Arjun woke up and immediately looked under the bed. The baby toy was not squeezed and the window was closed which greatly relieved Arjun as he got out of bed…” Maybe the wolf beast inside me has left now..” thought Arjun as he slowly got ready for school.

Coming to school was a mistake, everybody was teasing him for his behaviour the past week and had started calling him “dog boy” or “wolf boy” …Arjun somehow felt happy when they did that as he dints feel the wolf beast awakening inside him. Which made him think he was recovering...? All he had to do was pay a visit to the school library and then read the book once more to satisfy himself and also maybe the wolf inside of him.

The lunch bell rang like a melodious tune to Arjun as he stood up and walked towards the school library which was close to the cafeteria. But on his way, he bumped into someone twice his size and strength, Ricky, the school bully.

“Hey Wolfie, where you going?” he shouted with a voice that made the whole cafeteria turn at him. . “If you’re going to eat from the dustbin then I can give you the leftovers from my lunch too!” .The laughs of the students echoed through the cafeteria.

Arjun was taking deep breaths to control his temper but a sudden push from Ricky made him hit the ground. And then Arjun was gone.

What hit the floor was a wolf.

Brown hair started growing rapidly on Arjun’s hand and face … his eyes turned red and his teeth grew sharper and longer…his fingernails turned to claws and his legs grew longer.

Ricky was standing in front of a wolf twice his size and strength. With a thick ferocious voice, it said “You know what, I’ll eat you for lunch instead!”

The students in the cafeteria ran in all directions shouting and screaming. Ricky was shivering and made an attempt to escape but the wolf caught him by his collar and picked him up with his claws. “ANY LAST WORDS?!” shouted the wolf as it opened its mouth and began to chew on to its lunch slowly.

A very piercing and loud sound alarmed Arjun. It was his alarm clock. Arjun woke up breathing heavily and sweating uncontrollably …was it just a dream?

Arjun quickly checked the calendar ...the date was June 22, Monday.

This was the date when it had all begun, wasn’t it? Was it all just a long dream…or, a LONG NIGHTMARE?!

Arjun leapt from his bed joyfully but then stopped and looked at his open window, he clearly remembered closing it before he slept…and also, why was there so much long brown hair on the bed he slept on?
