Animal Lovers Vs Human Values.
Animal Lovers Vs Human Values.
During the Covid lockdown, I lived in a gated township in Ahmedabad. A township so lovely and self-sufficient that such an ecosystem would be difficult to find in other cities.
We, as humans, have some feelings for animals, particularly dogs, the most devoted companion nature has bestowed upon mankind. In our township, there were 8 to 10 stray dogs that were well fed by the residents, particularly the elderly ladies. With lockdown came the idea of working from home (WFH). Residents began feeding the strays during their evening walks because they had plenty of time. Slowly, feeding began twice a day, between 8 and 10 a.m. in the morning and 6 to 8 p.m. in the evening.
Multiple groups were formed in a 15-day period. Some began feeding peacocks, which had previously roamed the outskirts in nearby shrubs and had now established a semi-permanent residence on treetops, water tanks, vacant plots, and bungalows within the township.
Stray dogs marked their territories along similar lines every 300 meters or so, each territory having a specific owner. They had access to everything they needed for survival, including potable water, milk, biscuits, dog food, and so on. Pigeons are another highlight. Pigeon feeding has been a tradition for centuries. It has some strange scripture backing for attracting luck. Their populations grew as well, with nests visible in nearly every building of the strong 2000 flats. Our Animal Lovers were so obsessed with their newfound love that even minor alterations with them were circulated in WhatsApp groups.
So far, everything is going swimmingly. Peacocks, stray Dogs, and Pigeons became accustomed to their new surroundings over the next two months and became completely reliant on feeders. The number of new-born and group members increased dramatically. Society Guards were forced to bear the brunt of their wrath. They were bitten several times, chased by peacocks, and sickened by their droppings. Guards, helpers, and cleaners became less present as their health deteriorated. The area around the convenience stores became a popular location for taking selfies with stray animals. Evening strolls and cycling became unpopular among children. Even some elderly people stayed inside.
These three groups - Dog Lovers, Peacock Herders, and Pigeon Feeders - conveniently forgot that there were also Humans who needed our care and support. The Banjara community and other wanderers who used to sit outside the entrance and wait for the residents to help were completely ignored. They would patiently wait for small amounts of assistance in the form of food or rations to feed their families, but they were ignored. Their battered eyes would fixate on the packets and other items that the group used to carry for their particular breed.
We pride ourselves on being the most evolved species, but are we on the right track? The humanity calls for an explanation.
