A.R.K.- Act Of Random Kindness

A.R.K.- Act Of Random Kindness

This happened with me during a train journey from Bombay to Gujarat. There was a young boy in his late twenties, who walked up and down the coach to have passengers polish their shoes.

As he approached me I had the usual approach like everyone else has "my shoes don't need polish". He said I have the cream for brown shoes also. Yet I said no. He said it will cost you 5/- only. I said take 10/-. But don't polish my shoe. He replied, "that would seem like I am begging bhaiya (brother)".

I did not know what to say. I nodded and he did a neat job with my shoes.

I asked him again "how much?" He said, "whatever you feel like you give". He thanked me for giving him a job. His first day in Bombay (as he mentioned it). He was polite, courteous, and even wished me a good day.

I do not know what I did. Maybe a random act of kindness by allowing him to do his job. Or maybe the fact that he wanted to earn it with a brush and cream instead of mere open palms.
