To A Girl Like You And Me

To A Girl Like You And Me

To the girl who was

Too young

To understand

Too young to know

When he gave you a piece of candy

As his hands crept below

To the girl who

Was too naïve

And had a glass too many

“You’re safe with me,” he said

As he poured another

That rapist in disguise

To the girl who

Couldn’t talk

He’d visit for a

Week in a year

“Be nice to your uncle,” mom would say

As he took her to the secluded park

To the girl who

Was too believing

He said she got the job,

Invited her over for dinner

She was exhilarated

Until she felt a hand on her bare thigh

Under the table

What a bummer!

To the girl who

Was afraid

When he threatened to leak your videos

So you held your wrist out

And used a blade

To the girl

Whose story wasn’t told

To the girl

Whose lips were sealed

To the girl

Who couldn’t survive

I’m sorry I cannot change history

But I promise

I promise in this better world

In this brighter future

Stories will be told

Lips won’t be sealed

And girls like you

Will survive!
