Friends For Life?

Friends For Life?

3 mins 20.3K 3 mins 20.3K

It was my first day of Nursery, I still remember

My mother had come all the way,

To that oh-so-colorful classroom to drop me off,

And there he was, sitting alone in the farthest corner

Looking so lost, those puppy eyes and that innocent face

We bonded over our similar obsession

Of Power Rangers and Milky bar during the lunch hour,

By the end of the day he had asked me, friends for life?

I still remember, nodding my head shyly and excitedly.

It was my first day of First Standard,I still remember,

My mother had come all the way,

To that classroom with walls full of posters to drop me off,

And there she was, in between a group of at least seven other kids

Talking animatedly and elatedly with those shining, bright eyes.

We bonded over our mutual liking

Of Power puff girls and caramel,

By the end of the day she had asked me, friends for life?

I still remember, nodding my head with a smile and thoughts of another friend for life,

Who I have already lost way behind.

It was my first day of High School, I still remember

My mother had come all the way,

To my new, bigger classroom to drop me off,

And there she was, standing in front of me and introducing herself

With those cat-eye glasses, high ponytail and killer self confidence.

We bonded over our same obsession

For balance sheets and Anne Hathaway,

By the end of the day she had asked me, friends for life?

I still remember, nodding my head with sad eyes and thoughts of them

Who also promised to stay but didn’t.

It was my first day of college, I still remember

My mother had come all the way,

To that metropolitan city to drop me off,

And there she was, roaming around in the corridor outside the classroom

Looking as scared and bemused as I felt on the inside.

We bonded over our fetish

For old Hindi songs, rom-coms and guys who were unavailable,

By the end of the day she had asked me, friends for life?

I still remember, just smiling a sad smile and wondering

How long will this ‘for life’ last.

It was my first time to the prom, I still remember

My mother had helped me,

To shop for that perfect dress and those perfect accessories,

And then he came, knocking at the door, punctual and on time

Looking ravishing, in that tux and bow-tie that matched my dress.

We bonded over a glass of wine and songs of Ed Sheeran,

By the end of the night he had asked me, will you be mine forever?

I still remember, shouting yes way too dramatically and wishing

For this promise of forever to last longer than those other four.

It was my first heartbreak, I still remember

My mother had come,

With two cups of hot chocolate and a DVD of ‘The Sound of Music’,

And there we were, cuddled together on the couch

In front of the flat screen and humming together along with Do-Re-Me.

We bonded when she said that I deserved something much better and beautiful and real,

While I was crying and whining about how much it hurts,

By the end of it all I realized how in my quest for finding a constant I didn’t see that I already had it

I still remember, hugging her tight and being thankful for being my only forever friend
