The Day After
The Day After
I stood at the edge of desert
Staring at its vastness
Huge swathes of sand and sand dunes clouded my vision.
The desert stared back
Unseeing
Unfeeling
Yet powerful enough
To devour everything coming in its way.
I asked the desert
Give me some sand
The desert with its silence
Gave its acquiescence
The unmentioned condition was
Eventually whatever belongs to it
Has to come back.
My hands closed around the sand
As much as they could hold
Yet as the time passed
The sand slipped out of my hands
Slowly but surely.
It is day after
Again I stand at the edge of desert
I don’t make an effort to collect sand
I know desert will take it back.
My power diminished
I marvel at the power of desert
And wait for it.
To give me a little bit of sand for keeping
Not for ever
But for a little while.
