My Fake Magic Tricks
My Fake Magic Tricks
My girlfriend held me dearly
It reminded me of our first time
But my senses told me that it would be the last time
"Why don't you perform a magic trick..
..like you always do when I am sad?" she asked..
I wished I could perform the magic trick she wanted
But changing her parents' minds wasn't as easy a magic trick
As making a toffee appear out of her handkerchief
As making a butterfly fly out of her geometry box..
I wished I could perform the magic trick she wanted
But changing my caste wasn't as easy a magic trick
As making a minion toy appear out of my t-shirt
As making a pair of earrings appear out of my wristband..
I wished I could perform the magic trick she wanted
But making my family rich wasn't as easy a magic trick
As making a rose appear out of an empty cup
As making a poem appear on a chocolate wrapper..
My girlfriend held me dearly
"If you can't pull off the magic I ask for..
..at least show me your special one" she said..
I smiled and kissed her
Sucking in all our fights and tears
Passing on all our smiles and cheers
I then walked away from her
Carrying out my most practiced magic act -
The act of letting go of the people I love..
What else could I have done?
I was, after all, a fake mystic
Shouldn't one be a real mystic
To marry an Indian girl he loves
With the acceptance of the Indian society?
