Endless Light
Endless Light
Soft velvet strips of impenetrable night press down,
On them. Redolent with jasmine, moonflower, and sweet honeysuckle,
A night to die for, to love with abandon
The tuberoses in her smile, the lump of pain in his throat.
She bends her lovely head o'er the still, glassy lake;
His sighs echo amongst the stars gazing at her beauty
Afloat, beneath the drooping bridge. Sweeping her hair back,
A silken waterfall, a moonless night, coal black,
What secrets they do whisper to the willows, what tender word -
Hark! The harsh screech of a nightbird, out of sight,
Rending the black brocaded air like a jagged knife!
What glowing eyes hidden in the shrubs, what cruel fangs they warn of,
Crouching behind the trees? look out!
Look out! Before it's too late for flight! You cannot fight!
We, who are born to endless night, cannot but envy the endless light of true love!
