Day 3 - First Impressions Can Lie
Day 3 - First Impressions Can Lie
I returned to the cafe today with a strange feeling in my heart.
Yesterday, she had been warm, kind, and easy to talk to.
Today, I wondered if I had imagined all of it.
She arrived late, and she did not look at me.
She walked past my table without a smile.
She chose the farthest corner and opened her book at once.
My heart sank a little.
I thought, perhaps yesterday had meant nothing to her.
Perhaps I was only a stranger who had offered a chair.
I tried to write, but my words felt heavy.
I kept looking at her from the corner of my eye.
She seemed distant, lost in her own world.
When the waiter brought my coffee, I did not feel like drinking it.
I thought, first impressions can lie.
Yesterday, she had seemed open, today she seemed closed.
Then, something small changed everything.
Her book slipped from the table and fell to the floor.
I stood up quickly and picked it up for her.
When I gave it back, she looked up, and her eyes were red.
Not from anger, but from tiredness and sadness.
"I am sorry," she said softly. "I had a difficult morning."
In that moment, I understood my mistake.
She was not being cold. She was only carrying a heavy day.
I had judged her silence too quickly.
She smiled then, a tired but honest smile.
"Thank you for yesterday," she said. "You made a bad rainy day feel better."
I smiled back, and the distance between us disappeared.
We spoke for a while, about bad mornings and small comforts.
She told me she had not slept well, and I told her I understood.
Sometimes, a kind word is enough to change a whole day.
When she left, she waved at me from the door.
I waved back, feeling lighter than before.
Today had taught me something important.
First impressions can lie, but a second chance can reveal the truth.
And I was glad I had not walked away.
This November was teaching me to look beyond the first glance.
