Day 2 - An Unexpected Encounter
Day 2 - An Unexpected Encounter
I returned to the same cafe the next morning.
I told myself I had come for the coffee and for my writing.
But in truth, I had come hoping to see her again.
The same corner table was empty.
The same rain had washed the streets clean.
I opened my notebook, but my eyes kept searching the door.
Then, in a single moment, everything changed.
The door opened and the wind rushed in with her.
She was holding her book tightly, trying to save it from the rain.
Her umbrella had turned inside out.
Her hair was wet, her smile was nervous.
She looked around for a dry place, and there was none.
Except for the empty chair opposite me.
I stood up before I could think twice.
"Please, sit here. Your book will get wet," I said.
She looked at me, surprised, then relieved.
"Thank you. I did not expect anyone to notice," she replied.
Her voice was soft, but it stayed with me long after.
We sat across from each other in silence for a while.
The waiter brought two coffees and placed one near her.
She thanked him, then looked at me with a small smile.
"You were here yesterday too, weren't you?"
She asked, and I nodded, trying not to appear too eager.
"I was writing. I noticed you were reading."
She laughed softly and showed me her book.
It was the same book I had once loved.
In that moment, the cafe felt less like a cafe and more like fate.
We spoke about books, about rain, and about November.
She told me she comes here every week to read in peace.
I told her I come here every day to write in peace.
When she stood up to leave, she paused near the door.
"Maybe I will see you tomorrow," she said.
I said, "I hope so," and I meant every word of it.
She walked away into the rain, but my day had changed.
The unexpected encounter had become the best part of my November.
And I knew, this was no longer just a quiet month.
