A Fair World

A Fair World

The dream I still cherish,

Is to see women in this world flourish.

For her to live a life without a blemish,

And not to be suffer from any behaviour boorish.

As a student I batted for women’s rights,

When in school, we were our due denied.

Boys may seem stronger, but girls are no less,

Just because we look frail, please do not with us mess.

School times actually set the ground,

Where I discovered I could not be pushed around.

I learnt that if you stand by your convictions,

People then don’t dare to impose on you any contradictions.

In a world populated by bigots and prudes

School taught me to ignore them and their attitudes.

From a tender age we were taught,

To fight injustice at any cost.

Now as a young woman, living my life,

The lessons learnt in school help me face my strife.

The blatant inequality that I see everywhere,

Makes me to cry out in anguish and pull my hair.

Women down the ages have seen it all,

They have had to through a man’s bigoted views crawl.

Labelled a ‘loose’ woman if she wears what she wished,

Her intellect and her achievements are summarily dismissed.

That she can successfully juggle her career with other chores,

An insecure male that also deplores.

At every turn she has to prove herself in a man’s world,

At a slightest oversight, disparaging words are at her hurled.

I dream of a day when the sexes are seen as equal,

And both men and women get a fair chance to colour the world easel.

A day when she doesn’t need a ‘him’ to make her complete,

Though a woman knows this, to make a man understand this will be a tremendous feat.

One day she too will open the car door for him,

And the inequality chasm between them will slowly trim.

I hope to see the change in my lifetime,

And to see a new world order emerge will be a pleasure sublime.
