Day 5: Green: How I Saved That Tree

Day 5: Green: How I Saved That Tree

It is a long story that I would like to keep short. I know that it will be a disgrace to the protagonist of the story for no words can sing the song of love I have felt towards the jamun tree.

That tree of my childhood and its many, many memories. It was just outside our house, that tall jamun, its leaves green, its branches and trunk brown, spilling gaiety over the street. The tree was ours, a reminder of my grandfather who had nursed it since a sapling.

Why did we want to cut it? To make space for a car park outside our house.

But I won't let them cut it. Not for the world. I had memories to live on. Only memories. Dangling from its branches when I was a kid, eating ripe jamuns off it and hiding from my parents in its cool shade.

I saved it when they came to cut it. Gathering the neighbourhood boys to snug to it like the Chipko movement. I was a forty year old man with ten year old boys.

But I did not care. We saved that tree. And by the way it was the fifth day of Navratri that day, typical of the colour green that aspires to relate to the preservation of mother nature.
