At first glance, she seemed to be sleeping, her eyes closed, hands folded, but on closer notice, you would notice the unusually pale skin, the lack of a pulse and the distinctive odour of rotting. She was dead. My eyes filled up with tears and my hands started to shake. I touched her forehead. Her skin was as cold as ice. On her bedside table was a half-bitten pretzel which seemed like it had been left out for weeks. The pretzel was definitely coated with poison.

Someone had poisoned my mother, Diane. I ran out of the room, took out my phone, and called the police. They were on their way.

The police arrived and started investigating the room where the murder had taken place. I told them that I had been away for three weeks, on a business trip to Chicago. The only person who had been left with my mom was Sarah- my mom’s caretaker, who had been hired just before I was leaving for Chicago.

But now, she was nowhere to be seen. Coincidentally, all of my mom’s jewellery was gone. How could she do such a thing! I told the police that I had called my mom every day the first week I left. My mom said that Sarah was very kind and helpful during that time. When I tried calling her the second week, the calls were always sent to voicemail. I just thought that my mom must have been busy and left the phone somewhere. The third week was when I got a bit worried. Both Sarah and my mom wouldn’t answer their calls. I told my neighbour- Mrs Norris to check on the house but she said that she was away on vacation. I didn’t know what to do so I took the next flight back home and that’s when I discovered that my mom, HAD BEEN MURDERED.

The police rang up the investigation department. Detectives arrived and started to inspect the entire house. I had been traumatised by the entire incident. I didn’t know what to do. I wasn’t able to hold back my tears. I started crying. My mom- who had been with me for the past 27 years, was now no longer with me. That thought sent a wave of sadness. My eyes went all blurry. I fainted.

When I woke up, I was in a hospital room. My friend, Anna, was beside me. I saw her talking to the doctor. She saw me awake and smiled. I could hear the doctor saying, “She’ll be alright. She is just grief-stricken by the entire incident.”

After saying that, the doctor went away to treat other patients. Anna turned towards me. She held my hands and said, “Everything will be alright. I’m with you.” As soon as she said that, her phone rang.

“Fiona, it’s the police. They’re saying that they have a suspect, Mrs Norris. They’ve found her fingerprints on the bedside table.” Anna told me.

I was shocked. Mrs Norris!?! Why would she do such a thing?
