I was born in a Mallu Muslim family. As it was Onam [Kerala's festival] holidays, as a joint family, everybody was there. We were making the biggest fuss of our life. Our moms were getting so mad at us for all the mess created. The ladies were in the kitchen cooking while gossiping; the teens were singing and dancing. As all Muslim families of Kerala almost all men were abroad. The kids were playing all sorts of games they could think of. The most played game was hide and seek and cricket. I loved hide and seek more because I would hide in all sorts of places.

The little girls and boys started fighting over which game to play. Alas, they came to a conclusion of playing cricket for some time. The force of the bat on the ball, with a thud, made the ball soar. Sixes and fours were howled at each other. We lived in the coastal areas of Kerala. Soft breeze tickled our skin. And the stinky smell of fish. We were competitive which caused big fights in between.

‘Ahhh…….’

An abnormal scream arose from the midst of our game. We ran towards the scream.

It was my cousin, Akko. He clutched his head tight with pain. He collapsed. We didn’t know what happened. We called our parents. His parents and my parents together got in with him in the ambulance. He got a seizure in the ambulance. He started being abnormal while asleep. As it was Onam holidays, main doctors were on holidays. At last, at a hospital a doctor attended.

The doctor said there was some problem in his brain. He advised Akko’s parents that he needed some special attention which his hospital was unable to do so. He was immediately transferred to a big hospital which had neuro-specialist care. He was in ventilator. He was critically ill.

Meanwhile, rumours arose in our village. Some said it was because of a fight. The most remembered one was that he got hit by somebody. The mood of the whole family was dull. Days passed by, with no improvement. Then the doctors did their work. He improved.

At home, we used to have a kid goat .The kid who had been coloured black and had white spots. The ears were plain white. She had a little horn. She was cute and very playful. One day, the healthy goat died. We were really sad. But……..

It was the day Akko was removed from the ventilator. The day we finally knew that Akko was going to be alive. Some superstitious person from the village said that he was alive because of the goat that died for him. It was the most hilarious and irrational thing that I have heard that gloomy week.

Thus, the goat sacrificed itself for him.
