‘Joanne Claire Gresham has wrecked havoc in school’ shouted her headmistress in a shrilly voice. This Joanne Claire Gresham is a teenage tomboy. She fought with some boys and one of them is seriously hurt. Jo’s mother shot her a look of anger. She stood there with some kind of pride, that she had seriously hurt a boy in school. Her mother was just so displeased with her daughter. She seriously hated her mother for being overprotective and restrictive over her. Jo’s mother lead while Jo followed. Her mother walked with displeasure while Jo strutted.

‘All you do is eat and sleep and watch nothing else’ said her mother.

‘Then where did all my marks come from? You never have time to teach me at all. All you do is work, eat, sleep and repeat’ Jo said with mixed emotions. Her mother didn’t know what to say. What Jo said was completely true, each and every word of it.

Jo went straight to sleep.

**************

Jo opened her eyes to see the butterfly wall decals on her ceiling. Instead, she saw the blue sky and bright hot sunlight flashing on to her face. She started to feel the burning hot sand on her spine. She jumped up to see where she was. Jo was in the middle of a desert!

The desert had thorny cacti and palm trees. It was so hot, and Jo didn’t have a drop of water in her body. She walked towards a palm tree. Halfway towards the palm tree, it disappeared. She started to get really tired. Her eyes started to get blurred. Then she a figure walking towards her. A masked man was coming toward her. The man plunged his hands into Jo’s throat. Jo tried to raise her hand to punch her. But she had no energy. The hot sun had drained it all.

Then suddenly somebody took that guy up and threw him away. It was her mom. Jo fell into the ground without energy. When she opened her eyes, her mom hugged her tight. Her mom gave her some water and energized her. That’s when Jo hugged her mom back.

Even though she hated her mom outside, she loved her mom somewhere in her heart.

The sky turned orange to purple. It was sundown. The hot breeze had turned cold. The moon and stars shone brightly in the sky. Jo had no one but her mom near her. They’ve been walking for hours. Jo lied down on the sand.

“Walk, if you want to reach home.” Her mother said, irritated.

“I’m tired.” Jo sighed.

“Ok then, we could rest for a while then.” Her mother said, reluctantly.

Her mom lay down with her. The moon seemed to have brightened, and the stars stayed there admiring the beautiful moon. A shooting star soared, leaving a mark in the sky.

Mom seemed to be more tired than Jo. She fell right asleep.

Jo heard something moving to the right of her. She stood up and turned to the right. She saw the same man who attacked her earlier standing there, not with a knife but a gun. The man aimed the bullet towards Jo. She started walking backwards. Suddenly, she hit her back on a tree. She closed her eyes. She knew this was her end.

She heard the bullets clicking.

She heard the trigger being pulled.

Then, she heard a gunshot and froze.

She opened her eyes.

She was alive. A triumph went through her spine. She looked down.

A body laid there, the chest colored red with blood. Hair lay flat on the sand. It was her mom.

The man had shot her mom. She sacrificed her life for Jo.

“Mom, mom wake up.” Jo screamed onto her.

Then she heard her speaking the same words to me. That was when Jo actually saw her butterfly wall decals. It was all just a dream. Mom heard Jo’s scream and had come to comfort her.

“Oh, mom you are alive.”
