Like any story this is a story about two friends. Two friends who loved each other immensely. Who cared for each other. If one got hurt the other could feel the pain. They fought at times but patched up easily. It is of an unbreakable bond called friendship. This story is about Shahna and Krishna.

The story is set during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. Shahna was eight years old and belonged to a poor household in Pakistan where her family reared sheep to get an income. Krishna was ten years old and belonged to a rich household in India and he was the landlord's son. Despite belonging to a rich household he was not arrogant and haughty. Instead, he was well behaved and polite.

One day Shahna was playing with her sheep when one of her sheep went missing. She noticed that her sheep had crossed the Pakistan border and reached Punjab. She ran behind the sheep but when she reached the Pakistan-Punjab border she suddenly remembered what her parents told her that she should not cross the Pakistan-Punjab border. She stopped at that place and started calling out for her sheep. It seemed like no heard her. She stood there and started praying.

Somewhere she heard the sound of her sheep and it seemed like the sound was approaching her. When she opened her eyes she saw a boy holding her sheep. He asked 'Is this your sheep?'. First, she was reluctant to answer because her parents had told her not to speak to strangers. Then she said yes and snatched away the sheep from the boy's hand and ran away.

When she went home she really felt sad for behaving rudely with the boy. She decided that she would go to the same spot the next day and say sorry to him.

The next day she went to the same spot and started waiting for the boy but it seemed like he will never come. She waited for an hour and was about to leave when someone tapped her shoulder and then she turned around to see the boy who returned her sheep earlier looking at her. Shahna had beautiful eyes that anyone would follow in love with. She said sorry to the boy. The boy introduced himself and said that his name was Krishna At first, Shahna was reluctant to introduce herself but she gathered courage and told her name as Shahna.

The boy asked whether they could be friends. She was scared at first and said yes seeing the gentleness in his eyes. Like that they became friends and started seeing each other everyday. No one knew about their friendship, not even their parents. They used to play games, feed each other, tell stories etc. One fateful day they were playing games when riots took place and they heard the sound of guns, bullets and saw people running here and there for their lives.

Holding Shahna's hands Krishna also started running and suddenly Shahna's leg hit a rock and she fell down. Krishna helped her to get up At this time a bullet came whizzing past them and Krishna stood in front of her to save her. Again another bullet came and this time Shahna stood in front of Krishna to save him. Both of them died instantly keeping their promise "Oh my friend I won't leave you even at the time of death".
