Odd Couple

Dear diary,

I came across a lady stuck in the past. What is so unique you ask when we all tend to live through our past experiences? I will tell you tell her story today.

When Maya met me by chance at a party, I noticed that she felt suffocated in the crowd and was being overly friendly with all, it almost looked like she was overcompensating for the sadness in her eyes. When we were introduced, I noticed that she naturally let the other person lead the conversation and she would just add in when she was not in her own world. Looked like she was at ease with me. When I mentioned to Maya that I was a counselor she immediately jumped up and said, "Just the person I want to meet. Can I have an appointment at the earliest please?". We decided to meet up the very next day at the Center.

Maya met Mohan about 4 years ago in Chennai. For Mohan, it was love at first sight and he was determined to get Maya at any cost. He showed Maya a rich lifestyle and said all the right things to get Maya to fall in love with him. Once they were in a full-blown affair for a year and a half, Maya found out by chance that Mohan was married with children and that he was obsessed with her.

Maya immediately decided to call it quits. When she mentioned this to Mohan he starting pressuring her in all ways possible. She managed to break all shackles and free herself by leaving him and moving to Bangalore. Her life was getting back to normal when one day she got a call. The hello on the other side made her freeze as it was Mohan. He had found her new contact number. He keeps calling her and troubling her every now and then to meet him once.

Maya was weeping as she narrated her ordeal. I asked her what she has planned to do now? She said that she would block his numbers and keep ignoring all his advances until he finally understands that she will no longer go back to him.

Maya is strong-willed and independent and I am sure she will overcome this situation. But, don't you think such men must be punished by law? Also, don't you think our movies encourage such behaviour where the person who is obsessed keeps following the victim and finally the girl says Yes to him. This is very misleading.

I am grateful I could narrate this story here and hope this gets the people to be more alert when they choose their partners.
