Davina:

“Davina Reznick?”

“Miss Reznick?”

Thud! A coarse hand hit the desk where my hands rested, bringing me back to reality. “Miss Reznick, daydreaming will not be excused in this class, the next time you fail to respond, there will be consequences”, Mrs. Mendoza hollered, her nostrils flared and her eyes shooting daggers at me.

“Sorry, present”, I practically whispered, barely loud enough for Mrs. Mendoza to hear me as she continued to take attendance with the same steely glint in her eyes.

My mind whirled back to my thoughts. Two of my best friends, Nate and Vanessa Hale, were missing. They weren’t like most twins, they didn’t always see eye-to-eye on everything, in fact, they were pretty much like typical siblings; them being twins didn’t make a difference, as most people expected it to.

Their absence hung in the air like a bitter promise of despair and destruction- reminding that every second that passed was another second that they could be in danger. There was one question in particular, though, that I couldn't seem to get out of my mind- why here? why in Dawsbury- the type of town that barely has to worry about petty theft, let alone missing cases?

The rest of math class melted into more thoughts, each more terrifying than the last. In fact, I barely realised when the class ended and I headed to my locker until the tall, brooding figure of my third- and, fortunately, not missing- best friend, Ezra Hernandez. Glancing at his paler than usual face, I knew the same thoughts had been infiltrating his brain, refusing to leave so much as a tinge of hope.

“Have you heard from them?”, Ezra asked me, the usual gleam in his eyes dimmed to something melancholic and almost unrecognisable. I barely responded with a “no” when the high school’s doors were thrown open and a team of police officers walked in to the hallway.
