Chamundi Maa
Chamundi Maa
Mahisha was an Asura king who was slain by Maa Durga. After his death, the Asuras went back to Pataal-lok.
But very soon Shumbha, took the oath of revenge and became the Asura king.
Shumbha and his brother Nishumbha, mounted an attack on Svarg-lok,which was the abode of the devatas and succeeded in capturing it!
While the Asuras were celebrating their victory, Chanda and Munda, who were the trusted lieutenants of King Shumbha, kept an watch on the movements of the devatas.
The devatas went to Mount Himavat, from where they prayed to Goddess Durga for help.
Instead of goddess Durga, Maa Parvati, consort of Lord Shiva came and gave darshan to the devas. She was sympathetic. A female form came out from her body, a woman. She was Ambika, an incarnation of Maa Durga.
The devatas exclaimed 'Victory to Ambika!'
Chunda and Munda were watching all this from afar, and their eyes popped when Ambika made her appearance. She was a divine warrior and was very beautiful.
Chanda said that she would be a good match for their king.
Munda too nodded.
Shumbha listened carefully as Chanda and Munda gave an account of everything that had transpired at Mount Himavat.
He was thrilled when they described the Goddess Ambika to him. He thought that she was the epitome of feminine grace.
He declared to make her his queen.
He sent one of his courtiers with a proposal of marriage to the goddess.
Ambika was amused.
Ambika replied that she would be delighted to be his queen, but asked that was he the strongest?
The envoy was surprised as he thought that his king was ce
rtainly the strongest in the three worlds!
Ambika continued that she has taken a vow to only marry the strongest warrior in the Three Worlds!
The envoy answered that his king was certainly the strongest as he had defeated the devas!
Goddess Ambika replied that only if he can overcome Her in battle, then she would be convinced that he is the strongest!
The envoy returned to his master to tell him about Ambika’s reply to his proposal.
Shumbha was annoyed and decided to fight with goddess Ambika.
He summoned his commander-in-chief, Dhumra-lochana and ordered him to bring Ambika to him.
Dhumra-lochana marched with an army of battle-hardened soldiers to carry out his king’s orders.
When he spotted Ambika he attacked her with a thunderous roar.
The goddess calmly watched him come! When he was close enough she produced a sound, “HOOOM!”. The sound wave hit Dhumra-lochana in the centre of his forehead and alas! he was reduced to ashes!
Shumbha was filled with wrath when he heard about the death of his great general!
He angrily ordered his lietenants Chunda and Munda to go to war.
Ambika was not pleased to see Chanda and Munda. Her eyebrows came together in a dark and angry scowl, and from her forehead, came forth the terrible form of Kaali.
Chanda and Munda froze with terror when they saw Kaali Maa with her bloodshot eyes, a garland of skulls around her neck and her tongue coming out, descending on them. She wrecked the army they were leading, knocked off the heads of Chanda and Munda. And presented them to Goddess Ambika, who hugged her and hailed her as Chamundi, slayer of Chanda and Munda.
