The Mystery of Madhava

The Mystery of Madhava

It troubled the mind of maidens in Pushpavati,

The disappearance of Madhava and even amused the majority.

It filled women with woes and turned art-lovers into foes

Of the King, who was dismayed at His exploits.

Like a missing nail that derails the chariot,

An absent lamp that clouds a Hall in darkness,

A flowerless vine dwindling the forest charm,

Such was the disappearance, like sun deprived of its brightness and warmth.

The tunes of His flute filled air with magical waves,

While He played it returning from worshipping The Mahadev.

They enchanted the ears and his beauty attracted the eyes,

Women smitten'd in his desire, were possessed by His sway.

Not just the young ones even those with household chores,

The maids of the Queen and courtesans of the King

All collected in droves by humming to His notes,

Some went insane and a few turned ascetic, entrenched in his love.

Govinda, the king, approached by his citizens with anger and disdain,

'Deaf not be to our voice, the women have went wild.

Save us from His flute, lest we hunt him and burn alive. '

Coaxed by the subjects' impatience, He summoned Him at once.

As he faced the filled up palace, the king at once ordered,

'O the elusive Brahmana, show thy skills, before, any judgment I pronounce.'

Hanging by the King's order, He began playing the flute and with His voice,

He chanted the versus from scriptures, of love, and magic did follow.

Sweetness of His voice, sting'd even the pillars into a trance,

Beauty of his innocent soul blinded the shine of palace's gold,

Humbled by his talent galore, the Royal artists upon shame did stumble,

The King was left in wonder and awe, and even the Queen in his beauty had climaxed with love.

Madhava left the palace still ablaze with the tones he had set,

He had stirred love without a touch and made envy even the most restraint.

As he walked out of entrance, the thoughts he had were of fear of death,

When he sensed a pursuit, may be from the Entourage of soldiers.
