Soo jaa, Rajkumari. Soo jaa

Soo jaa, Rajkumari. Soo jaa

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

She rocked the baby gently, willing her to sleep

Only then, would she have some time to herself?

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

She let her mother massage her fevered brow.

She had to get well before her scholarship exam.

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

Her mother looked content as she hummed.

She was distraught; her baby sister had stolen her song.

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

Her mother went to work, leaving her sister with her.

If she had a phone, she would be in school instead.

>“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

She sang to her sister while their parents were sick.

They didn’t return from the hospital. She continued to sing.

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

Songs couldn’t fill an empty belly. She had nothing.

No school. No food. No money. No home.

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

She kissed her sister, left her outside the temple gate.

Just thirteen, she was ready to start her adult life.

“Soo jaa Rajkumari. Soo jaa.”

The baby’s eyes closed; she placed her on the cot.

Maybe someone was watching her baby sister sleep.
