She, Again
She, Again
She opened her eyes
As the sun rose
The child's first cry
Brought tears to the mother's eyes
It is a girl, She heard,
Holding her child tighter, she sank
As Her own story Flashed before her eyes
And Her broken heart
A girl child, they had exclaimed!
You are cursed her mother was told
taken away from the child
Her eyes couldn't find her mother
Her delicate feet
Touched the earth
But to hold her up
No hand was held
She loved the roar of cars
But grew up with old rag dolls
She wanted to run
But was held behind window bars
She tied her hair up
Into braids she didn't like
And dreamt about outfits
She always wanted to have
She looked around
At the boys who could,
Write all the words she spoke
If they can, why not me she asked
She fought her battle
And stepped into another world
Where she was learning
That she couldn't learn
They laughed at her
For wanting to try
They laughed at her
For having dreams
Yet she didn't stop
Listening to her heart
And finally became
What she wanted to become
She walked on the streets
Unwinding her braids
She walked on the streets
With outfits she dreamt
Oh stop young girl! They said
How can you wear something so short
Don't you have any shame
Any shame at all?
She left her dreams behind
in the vulnerable dark
She couldn't see the night sky
Without the window bars
She grew old and fell in love
With the green eyes and coffee complexion
An artist he was
Who had Coloured her canvas
But They tore her heart
Said he wasn't rich, and there she was
Living with a man
Who was never in her dreams
She was judged for Learning
She was judged for Working
She was judged for All the things
she was better at than him
Through the storm
She had never stopped hoping for a sunrise
And there came the rays
Shining on her beautiful child
It is a girl, She heard again
Holding her child tighter, she rose
Waking up from the nightmare
That had broken her heart
She took her child
And ran as far as she could
To a better world
For which she had always waited for
Your story will be way better
Way better than mine
She whispered in her girl's tiny ears
I'll help you chase your dreams
