Penny By Penny
Penny By Penny
Just one sight, he was entranced
By the collar, cuff and color of that jacket…
For it stood, majestic there, gleaming its worth
With a price tag that pushed him far.
Desire to buy it bloomed in him
Passion for it glowed bright &brim…
To make that jacket his own was his aim
& walked out of the store with faith & firm.
He worked all jobs saving penny by penny
All-day long, all night long…
Skipped his kip, food and all fun
For, he wanted to save every penny by penny.
Days passed like the flip of a coin
Seasons changed from fall to rain…
But his faith, all through it remained the same
Saving every penny by penny.
His tireless toil hit the toll
Every penny he saved made enough money…
Carried them, he, with utmost reverence
And stepped like a hero before the shop’s entrance.
Filled with awe, he entered slowly
&stopped before his dream momentarily…
The next minute, the jacket became his
For his penny by penny, served his bliss.
Outside he came bundled in pride
Cuddled in his jacket, now ‘his new bride’…
When a sudden a voice beside him said
‘Help me, Sir…I am weak & tired!’
He turned to the sight of a child disheveled
Shivering with a chill, ignored by the world…
Welling with tears, around his legs she furled
Seeking anything to escape the cold.
For the kind-hearted man was he…
The sight made him deeply moved…
He took his jacket, upon her it whorled
Releasing her from clutches of cold.
As warmness filled her tear-filled eyes
He put his last penny in her hand…
&turned away feeling thoughtful and many…
For his morrow will start again penny by a penny!
