Marital Rape

Born in a conservative Indian family.in the outskirts of a small town, she grew up to be a woman,

tied to the ground. Her aspirations were never allowed to fly high,

Her dreams- thousand times she saw them die.

As the only female child of the family, she toiled all day

Helping her mother in the household chores in every possible way

For no one else from the family ever entered the kitchen,

"A place for women" it was in the minds of men written.

A bright student she was but not allowed to be a graduate,

For "getting married" was considered her fate.

She turned eighteen on a day sunny and bright,

A day when years ago, all had wept on the birth of a girl child.

Her father thought it was time for them to pay off their liability,

She was soon to be sent to a stranger's house despite her ability,

Her ability to study further and prove herself.

But " women don't earn, they are not supposed to be of any financial help"

In a few days, a stranger visited her house,

Without her opinion, she was made to be his spouse.

He was patriarchal and dominant, she soon realized,

and her relationship with the new family was all materialized.

She had purchased the man with all her father's wealth,

Yet reduced to being a housemaid, was what she felt.

That night, she was extremely tired and weary,

Due to the lack of sleep her eyes were bulged and teary.

Completing all her work, she fled to the bed to sleep

Where she saw her shirtless husband staring at her like a lustful creep,

She understood his wishes but declined,

For her body needed rest and she needed peace of mind,

But shunning her opinion, he leaped on her like a beast,

And pounced on her tired body, caring the least.

And made love to his wife,

Who now hated her existence and cursed her life.

She was raped then every passing night,

But remained silent out of Fright.

For no one would ever support her cause,

As she was married, and Marital Rape never existed in the laws.

She was raped again, again and again,

But her screams and shouts were all in vain.

It was "MARITAL RAPE" of what each day she was dying,

Yet the society cursed her stating that she was lying!
