Mahatma
Mahatma
Mahatma
His journey began,
Amidst a diffident, defeated nation,
Shackled for two hundred years,
By the colossal colonial rulers,
Called the British.
His vision of freedom,
For his countrymen were,
Mocked, jeered at,
By that despotic lot, who,
Attempted to trifle his acts,
Stating it as 'gibberish'.
But he stood tall,
On those dark days,
Introducing non- violence,
And peaceful ways,
Reawakening the inner strength of his peoples' resolution.
In time, his ways would,
Crush the almost impenetrable walls of bondage,
And history would witness and
Record a free nation's ascension.
But it was not mere independence,
Which he handed over to his nation.
There was something more,
In his dream and his vision.
And that was,
His attempt to teach his countrymen,
To constantly strive for non- violence and peace.
And that's what makes him 'Mahatma',
To his nation and to the world,
Which often seems so divided,
Engaging in trivialities.
